Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Schierman.
Emma, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hello! My name is Emma Schierman, the creator of ESO Makeup. I grew up in the small town of Hutchinson, MN. My love for makeup started when I was in dance. I was fascinated by the power of makeup and decided to take it more seriously when I was 16 years old. I learned everything I know from YouTubers, specifically Nikki Tutorials; she was my favorite. I would watch her videos every day and was interested in learning all of her tips for makeup. I then made a YouTube account and makeup account on Instagram to get myself out there. I took a couple of years off but decided to continue my passion for makeup again at the start of this year. I had several people reaching out wondering if I still did makeup and would casually do it on the side. Because of this, I created a booking website where people could book with me for events like prom, weddings, or a simple girl’s night out. Since then, ESO Makeup has gotten bigger and bigger by the day. As of now, I have a busy summer/fall lined up and am extremely excited. I am beyond grateful for all of the opportunities that have fallen in my lap. My younger self would be so proud that I am following my dreams of becoming a makeup artist.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wish I could say that it has been a smooth road, but that is just not realistic. Coming from such a small town, I knew that people were going to talk, whether that may be good or bad. When I started doing makeup at 16 years old, I was going through bullying, rocky friendships, and never feeling like I could be my true self. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing because those were the reasons why I fell in love with makeup, and those were the reasons why I was so interested in learning more. Makeup never let me down. I remember being so scared to post my makeup looks because I was terrified of what everyone at school had to say. Eventually, I got over it and kept posting on social media, which helped me get better and better at makeup application. Since I created an online booking site, I have heard nothing but positive feedback and support!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I do is I apply makeup, whether that is a full face, just a base, or just eyebrows and eyeshadow, depending on the package you chose. My biggest goal is to have each and every client leave feeling more beautiful than they did coming into the appointment. I make sure that I understand what skin type I am working with before I apply anything to the face. This gives me a better understanding of what products to use that will work best for them. I would say I am known to be a good communicator when it comes to business and making sure everyone feels like they are being taken care of not only respectfully but in a timely matter. Something I am most proud of is finally getting outside of my comfort zone. I post videos of me talking about products and business updates on my Instagram story so that everyone can see how passionate I am about what I do. Another thing I am proud of is making my makeup kit bigger and bigger by the week. I have gotten lots of new products and everyday tools that make my life easier, and it is so fun to see everything come to life! Something that sets me apart from others is that I am constantly trying to better my skill and learn from everyone’s experiences they have with me. I want to make sure at your appointment you have nothing to worry about and help you feel beautiful.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
One quality that I think is most important to success is, taking criticism. Like I said before, I am constantly learning when it comes to marketing myself, makeup application, skin types/textures, product selection, etc. I want to know if I should be doing something different to enhance ESO Makeup. I love hearing feedback from others, especially when I first launched my personal website which includes an about me tab, portfolio, pricing, and FAQs.
