Today we’d like to introduce you to Frederick Nagbe.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a self-taught photographer. I have always had a passion for photography. I decided to take my passion to another level by purchasing my first camera, Canon 80D, in October of 2017. From the moment I bought my camera, I started to learn about my camera; the functions, ISO, shutter speed, etc. I also learned a few things about photography from Youtube. Within that timeframe, I constantly practiced shooting, specifically outdoor photography of nature, night photography (to teach myself how to shoot on manual), and my girlfriend. Whenever I learned something new from Youtube or a virtual lesson, I would immediately go and practice.
Also, during that time, my goal was to own my own studio in five years to have more a comfortable environment for my clients and feel more at home. By the spring of 2019, I was ready to take photography to another level and start shooting professionally, which I did. I was able to get my first photography studio in 2021 from the help of my girlfriend and clients. My studio is called ISO Studios and it is located in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Photography has not been a smooth road. It is like any other job; you have to learn your role and the functions. Above all, in photography, you have to know the business and understand the marketing side, or else you will not grow. Therefore, the struggle along the way for me was growing my business to the level I wanted it to and inventing new ways to add to my craft.
I still have more to learn because photography is an expected growth. As a photographer, you have to find a way to grow daily and improve from the previous work.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in portrait photography. I do not have to shoot explicit photos to let others know I am a photographer. I love for my work to be natural but still professional. My clients and prospective clients always say my work is very detailed, neat, clean, clear, has spectacular colors, and that I always capture the right angles. I love to tell a story through my photography because storytelling is an essential part of photography, and it must be told. What is photography without a story? Nothing. Again, photography is my passion. I love it. It is not about the money; it is about the experiences, capturing moments, and making memories. I believe in “Making Lifelong Memories One Snap at a Time.”
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Above all, from the beginning of my photography career, I put it in God’s hands that He would carry me to where my photography needed to be. Photography is very competitive. Some people are not who you think they are. You would think they would like to help you, but sometimes it is the other way around. They want to use you for your skills or they do not want to help you because they think you are a threat. I have never had a mentor. The only person that has helped and supported me throughout the years was my girlfriend. She has been handling the business side and all the behind the scenes work. If it was not for her, this business would not be where it is at. I am grateful for everything.
