Inspiring Conversations with Jake Whaley of Low & High Presents

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Whaley.

Hi Jake, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I stem from a family of 5 unique individuals born and raised in the suburbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Growing up, there was an inclination to use your imagination to fill the free time you had amongst the summer days outside. I found myself to be quiet from a young age as I always found that people would never listen to understand and truly grasp what was taking place in front of them. To this day, my quirky personality and genuine care for making a difference have led me to my current position as co-owner, talent buyer & artist manager of Low & High Presents.

I Joined Low & High officially in February of 2020 but had been helping the team and assisting with events and the fundamental shape and success of the initiative since 2019. Since joining, I have climbed the ranks inside of this small business to become co-owner with my partner (and original founder) Hunter Breault. Over the 3 years, we’ve been working together, we have thrown nearly 50 events ranging from in person shows, to online virtual events.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Low & High has been in constant reform over the years as we are always finding ways to change and better suit our patrons. We’ve pieced together these events, artist management & now the record label all through our own blood, sweat and tears. Relationships have been lost, sleep has been set aside, and sometimes I feel like our sanity is slowly slipping away from us. At the end of the day if the road is smooth, it’s because someone else paved it for you.

Truth be told, I wouldn’t change a thing even if I could go back in time. We’ve created this business entirely on our own and without any type of investors, or outside resources. What’s driven the fundamental success of the company is our friends, families, and fans who have dedicated their time and energy to supporting the vision that we have been piecing together. Without them, none of this would have been possible.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Low & High Presents?
Low & High Presents has three separate wings that all tie together. Events, Artist Management, Record Label.

We started off piecing events together all around Minnesota that reflected the elements of live entertainment in which we hold nearest to our hearts. Music ~ Art ~ Culture. These are the types of characteristics that you will find at every single one of our events. It is imperative when attending our events that you recognize we are not just here for a party. We are here to showcase the hundreds and thousands of hours that individuals pour into their craft.

The artist management really picked up during the first wave of covid-19 coming through the states. As the entertainment industry took a nosedive, we decided to fill our time with expansion into developing a roster of artists that accurately represent the Low & High family. We currently have Badman (IA), DRTY HBTZ (TX), Dublink (TN), Eastwood Red (MN), MixedMind (MI/MN) and Trip B (MN) on our roster and are actively scheduling and touring on their behalf. I personally Manage the Badman and MixedMind projects which cater to sound system culture with a strong following in the 140 dubstep realm.

Music has always been the core foundation for everything Low & High, which is why we found it imperative to start our own record label to follow suit with everything else. After releasing our first track in early 2020, we have since gained over 3,600 followers. Between 4 compilations, dozens of EPs, remixes and singles we have dropped over 100 tracks from artists all around the united states and across the oceans in every direction.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Everyone is going to struggle in a time of uncertainty, it’s those who push through and prevail against all odds that will come out stronger on the other end. Don’t be afraid of the unknown, for if it was known, everyone would be doing it.
