Inspiring Conversations with Daisha Collins of OLA GOLD BEAUTY

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daisha Collins.

Hi Daisha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began OLA GOLD BEAUTY. In January 2021. My inspiration first began when I was in college during the COVID-19 lockdown back in 2020. Due to COVID-19 most Dermatologists weren’t accepting appointments. I soon start to realize that the store-bought products weren’t doing enough for our melanin skin. During the lockdown in 2020, my husband was suddenly suffering from dermatitis for about 2 months. The lotions from the store was making his skin condition even worse, and the doctor couldn’t figure out the problem, so in hopes, while on lockdown, I decided to create my own herbal and vitamin-infused body butters, body oils and body lotions from scratch, all produced in my kitchen. After I began using the products I created, I immediately felt the difference on my body and skin, I then used the products on my husband’s skin and I healed his dermatitis within 2 weeks of using my products! Shortly after, I shared some of my products with my co-workers, schoolmates, close friends, and family, they were all raving about it, so I decided to take my product-making seriously, I used my own knowledge and knowledge I gain from college majoring in strategic communications and I developed my own marketing plan, created my own website, designed my logo, boxes and all of the labels. I remember when I first began selling my products online, I wasn’t expecting to get that many sales that soon, so I ended up getting overwhelmed and stepping away from OLA GOLD BEAUTY for a couple of months. What kept me going was my husband pushing me to not give up, me telling myself no matter how overwhelmed I get, to still be consistent, my dream and the people around me who believed in me. Now today I’m selling my products with the world!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Developing a company from scratch hasn’t been easy for me, there’ are days that I’m super proud that I’m doing everything on my own and then there are other days where I feel like it’s all a bit too much for me and I want to give up. Running your own business also requires you to be social and market yourself which is pretty funny because I’m a bit antisocial and the thought of me having to put myself out there was giving me so much anxiety. I tried doing a few lives and would easily get discouraged when people were not interacting, but whenever I feel uneasy I would tell myself “Daisha you’re that girl and you own the room! “ and then I feel much better.

We’ve been impressed with OLA GOLD BEAUTY, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Ola Gold Beauty is all handmade and I use high-end and high-quality ingredients that will do more than just provide your skin with temporary moisture. While mass-made products focus of making products in bulk for a cheap price. I pay the extra cost for the finest and purest ingredients because I care about helping people create a better, healthier and beneficial personal care routine, not just for the money. If you knew the amount of money I spend on product inventory you’ll be shocked. My ingredients are formulated to penetrate deep into the skin providing it with extra nutrients and added protection.

I produce natural, vegan and melanin-approved items such as body milk, body butter, body oil, butter scrub, bath soak and sea moss soap. The ingredients in my products do more than just give your body/skin with temporary moisture, my products are packed with natural butters, oils, herbs and vitamins, giving the melanin skin the nutrients it needs to thrive and shine.

I get a lot of compliments and good feedback about my body milk regarding its uniqueness and texture, but what makes OLA GOLD BEAUTY stand out the most is my color series bundle. I created 4 different bundles dedicated to your specific personal care needs, The ones I currently have available is the Orange series – dedicated to skin toning & brightening, Yellow series – dedicated to skin smoothing, cellulite & stress marks, and Pink series – for every day moisturize and then my newest bundle the Green Series – dedicated to dry & sensitive skin.

The word ola in Yoruba means wealth and like gold, the melanin skin is very valuable, lustrous and attractive in color. Which is why I believe not only is it important to feed our skin with natural herbs and ingredients, it’s very much necessary. The lotions on the shelf do not dedicate their products to the specific needs of the melanin skin and that’s what I aspire to change.

My goal is to encourage you to pamper your skin and body with pure high-quality ingredients, nutrients, herbs and vitamins. We want to create a beneficial and more natural personal care and skin routine for your skin and body.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always to myself and hate following trends. When I was younger I did struggle a bit with social anxiety, but whenever I got around people I’m comfortable with, I’m super silly, funny and caring. I’m very artistic, I use to draw, sing and dance when I was younger. I stop drawing as kid, I didn’t realize I had a talent and I didn’t really get pushed or encouraged to continue on with art, but I remember my 2nd-grade teacher submitting my artwork in some art contest and then me and my friend Angel had won and our artwork was placed in some art gallery and we made headlines in the local St.Paul newspapers, I was young and didn’t really understand what was going on in the time, but when I look back that was a special time. Currently, I love fashion, from making my own clothing, buying clothes and finding unique pieces. I’m a huge fan of fashion and hope to create my own line someday.
