Today we’d like to introduce you to Aimee Singh.
Aimee, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Plastic Free Pursuit was created out of a beautiful blend of passion and a desire for something more. It all started on a tiny tropical oasis situated in the Indian Ocean just East of Madagascar. So, why would something this small inspire such a big change? That’s easy – it’s HOME. Co-founder Amar was born and raised on this small but mighty piece of heaven. After spending over a month on the island, Amar and Aimee felt called to do more than just live an eco-friendly lifestyle – but to urge and help others to do the same. The slow, relaxed lifestyle makes sustainable living common sense in Mauritius. The supermarkets have compostable grocery bags, food waste is a big no-no, and reusables are everywhere. We thought “if an island so small in the middle of the ocean can be conscious of its waste, why can’t everyone else?” And that was how Plastic Free Pursuit was born.
What started as a way to inspire change has now grown to a community of over 57,000 people willing to put the effort into helping our planet heal and prevent further climate damage. While it’s just us two running the show, it’s no secret how much work goes into owning a small business. We like to be intentional with everything we do. This is why our ultimate goal is that at the end of their life, each one of our products will be fully recycled, re-purposed, or composted. Leaving nothing behind. This includes all our packaging and shipping materials.
When it comes to the brands we stock our shelves with, we put a lot of time and effort into researching to make sure they’re the best of the best. We ensure we know how each product is made, where the ingredients come from, who’s making it, where it’s being made, and that each process is done sustainably and eco-friendly. We also only stock products that we have either tested or used ourselves, so we KNOW they are as good as they claim to be. We store ALL products in-house, and ship from one location in Hugo, MN.
Plastic Free Pursuit – For you, from the Earth.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Smooth is the last thing our journey as small business owners has been, especially amid a worldwide pandemic. However, change is inevitable and we like to roll with the punches and learn as we go!
Our biggest challenge to this day has been trying to convince others just how imperative it is to act now and start consuming responsibly. We started this business to inspire positive change through consumerism, to hold larger corporations responsible for the trash they’re creating, and to prove that consumers have a say in what’s being produced on a larger scale. However, that’s not our only struggle.
As humans in this day in age, we always want the newest, coolest, most convenient products on the market. This goes directly against everything sustainability stands for. To live a sustainable lifestyle is to first use what you have, but what will last the longest, and only replace something when it’s completely necessary. We urge our community to buy reusable items that only need to be purchased once, and this goes against what all other corporations want.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We’re known for offering alternatives for everyday items that would otherwise be composed of and packaged in trashy materials such as plastic. We’re a one-stop shop for all things sustainable.
There is nothing more disappointing than purchasing sustainable items with good intentions, only for them to arrive surrounded by bubble wrap in a box sealed with plastic tape. Our promise is to never use any plastic in our packaging and shipping materials – only compostable and recyclable materials from us!
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Making a positive impact on somebody else’s life makes us happy. Knowing every single customer has made a sustainable change in their life – big or small – because of us makes us happy. The thought of a healthy planet, thriving instead of dying because of the human race makes us happy.
