Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Bogott.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After graduating with a degree in social work, I spent 12 years in the social service space. This included seasons in the field of adoption, international humanitarian work, and nonprofit administration. While I enjoyed my work immensely, I reached a place where I wanted to try something new. So, I took a corporate job.
Going from a 30-person organization to a Fortune 500 was a bit of a culture shock. The greatest challenge was feeling disconnected from the clients I was serving. I missed seeing and feeling the impact of my work.
During this time, my sister-in-law started asking for advice on her business. We talked about pricing and onboarding and client challenges. One day she said, “I am paying a business coach hundreds of dollars a month, but when I have a problem, I don’t call her – I call you. You should think about being a business coach”.
I had never thought about starting my own business, but my sister-in-law planted a seed I could not uproot. I started reading every book I could get my hands on about business, business coaching, and consulting. Within a couple of months, I knew this was the path I wanted to go down, and I took the plunge.
The piece that resonated so much with me was the aspect of helping people move forward. I had felt that in every position I held in my nonprofit work and now I saw a path to feel it again. I was hooked. In April of 2018, I registered my business and by the summer I left my job and went out on my own.
I didn’t want to go down the social media route to get clients, so instead, I challenged myself to meet with 90 people in 90 days. This ’90 in 90′ was an amazing journey and helped not only bring in my first clients but also produced an amazing network to support those same clients with services I did not provide.
Within a few months, I had replaced my income and was loving the freedom, flexibility, and earning potential of being on my own. Now I am four years in and so thankful for my sister-in-law’s seed-planting!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the greatest challenges was changing my thinking from an employee to a business owner.
Instead of an employee, I started to see myself as the caretaker for this new entity. I learned to stop thinking about how much each service was per hour and relate that to what I made in previous positions. I stopped forcing myself to sit at my computer from 9 am to 5 pm each day, and I changed my thinking from “what do I want to do” to “what does the business need.” After those changes, my next steps, pricing, and offerings became easier to discern.
Most importantly, thinking as a business owner separated me emotionally from my business. I could now see things that “failed” as an opportunity to make changes versus a personal failure. Mentally, that was a game-changer!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Amy Lynne Coaching specializes in working with early-stage and emerging solopreneurs who have turned their skill set or passion into a business. This includes bookkeepers, web developers, chiropractors, therapists, content creators, VAs, consultants, photographers, and the like. Annual revenue ranges from $0-2M, but the majority are between 40K and 100K (and growing!)
My main offerings include one-on-one coaching, group coaching cohorts, and mastermind cohorts. The aim of coaching is to help business owners have more confidence and clarity on the next steps to reach their goals.
The core values for my business are:
1) Help First – the initial consultation is free and my main goal is to give practical, actionable advice during our first interaction.
2) Connect Well – If there are connections I can make to help your business grow, I won’t just send you the one who gives me a kickback, I will send you a list of people I think can best meet your needs.
3) Be Honest – if another coach/consultant would be a better fit for your business success, I will make that intro!
What makes you happy?
The things that make me happy: time with my nieces and nephew, sitting by a campfire with friends, or reading a great book at home on my couch.
For my work, the best weeks are when a client says, “I took that step I was scared to take and good things came from it.” I love getting to watch new businesses grow from the ground up knowing I played a small part in helping them reach their dreams.
