Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Huffman.
Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Edina, MN. I went to Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, IA, and got my BA in Education and then went on to University of Saint Thomas for my Masters in Reading Education. I was hired at Eden Prairie Schools and taught 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade for 6 years. I had a “quarter-life crisis” and took a leave of absence for job exploration. I was hired on at Target as in-store management and LOVED it. Worked at Target for 6 years and was promoted to the STL (store team lead) role. When I got promoted, I relocated to Sioux Falls, SD. I was there for about 2.5 years and was ready to return home. I realized the importance of community and truly missed it. Was recruited to JCPenney as a General Manager–did that for 3 years. While working at JCP, I met my husband, William Huffman, on match.com. We were married 18 months later to the day.
Long story short, we got married and started looking for our house. After Will had gone to 47 OPEN HOUSES, I told him that was enough, and he would get into real estate. 3 weeks later, he was in classes and licensed within 8 weeks. I joined him in real estate about 2 years later. 5 years ago, we started RE/MAX Results: A Good Life Group. We have a team of 11 and sold approximately $60Million in Real Estate in 2021. It has taken blood, sweat, and tears, and it is our life’s best work thus far.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh, I’ve had them. I had several medical issues growing up. The biggest one was I had a tumor on my liver that was removed when I was 16. It was about the size of a softball. As an adult, the biggest challenge I have been through would be our “personal recession” or our “financial failure,” which happened in late 2019/early 2020. We went through some major financial hardship–on the outside, everything looked great, and on the inside, we were personally really struggling. We worked our way out of that situation and haven’t looked back. What we gained, though, was a TON of compassion for others going through a hard time. We share our story to take some of the shame off of people. Shame is one of the heaviest emotions to carry. It taught me much about judgment, approaching things with curiosity and more. From this experience, Will and I have started a podcast, “Life Behind the Highlight Real,” where we listen to other people’s stories and life-changing events.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a real estate agent/team leader for RE/MAX Results: A Good Life Group. We work with 8 full-time agents, 1 part time agent and two support staff. My biggest pillar of business is referral and repeat clients. Our clients become friends as relationship building is an important piece of our culture. I am also a coach for GloverU – a national real estate coaching company – I love helping other agents locally and around the country build their business to live their UNREAL Life. I am involved at MAR (Minneapolis Area of Realtors) and have served on the MAR Foundation for the last 3 years. This year, I am the Vice-Chair for the MAR Foundation. It is important for me to give back and be involved.
What matters most to you?
I have focused diligently on taking care of myself first before I can ever take care of others. It hasn’t been easy, but I have set some health goals and I am reaping the rewards of this work. I was asked off a ride at Universal Studios on March 28, 2021. It was humiliating and embarrassing. It was also the best thing that ever happened to me. It was my WAKE UP call. Since March 30th, 2021, I have made it my goal to move my body daily. As of typing this, I have ridden my Peloton 382 rides. and now I also work out with a trainer twice a week for strength training. For these very same health reasons I stopped drinking alcohol since March 2021. Because I have started taking care of myself daily, I can be a better wife, dog mom, real estate agent, peer, and so much more.
