Meet Brian Christensen of BC Woodshop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Christensen.

Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us how you got started?
I started woodworking as a hobby around 2010 to build furniture for my own home. Eventually, family and friends began asking me to make things for them, and from there, it snowballed into what is now BC Woodshop. Over the last few years, I’ve been taking on 20-25 commissioned furniture builds a year, ranging from smaller furniture to large built-ins. I also have a few home goods items like cutting boards, rolling pins, and spatulas that I sell through a local store and online.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think all businesses have some growing pains and struggles along the way. It has been primarily learning how to price my work to ensure each job is profitable and managing my time and building schedule so I can let my customers know when they can expect their project to be completed. I’m typically booked out for 3-6 months which can make it a bit challenging to predict when I may be done with someone’s project when I’m quoting new jobs.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about BC Woodshop?
BC Woodshop is a custom furniture business that utilizes locally sourced materials, including domestic hardwoods from local sawmills and distributors. Our furniture and built-ins are also locally crafted, so you’re working directly with the craftsman, and we can customize your item to fit your space and needs. To the best of our ability, we utilized local suppliers for hardware and other supply needs. Far too often, the furniture you find in big-box stores won’t last more than a year and, in many cases, can pose a danger to you and your family. The strong, solid furniture we build can ease your fears that a bookcase, dresser, or other large furniture will fall on you or your child.

At BC Woodshop, we strive to create beautiful, high-quality furniture that will last for generations. We use the local, sustainable hardwoods to ensure we are protecting our environment and supporting our local communities to ensure other small businesses like ours will thrive. We do everything we can to ensure all materials and parts used are up to our standards. Everything is crafted right here in our Fergus Falls, MN shop to the largest extent possible.

In addition to custom furniture and built-ins, we also make a line of home goods items on our website at www.bcwoodshop.us. These make great gifts for family and friends!

What are your plans for the future?
In the future, I plan to continue to grow the business and take on more commissions each year. I’m seeking a larger shop space to allow this to happen.
