Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Elmore.
Hi Katie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In college, I always knew I wanted to be in the health field; I love knowing how things work. I started with nursing, thought maybe a physician assistant, and then decided on pre-med. I graduated pre-med and even took the MCAT. After graduating, I worked in a hospital and decided this was not the place for me. I applied to chiropractic school, and everything changed for me. Chiropractic was a perfect balance of diagnosing and figuring out the main issue without the medications. Once I graduated from chiropractic school, I worked as an associate for a couple of chiropractors in the area. About 10 years ago, I opened my practice in Kasson, MN. I started my practice like most chiropractic offices, focusing on pain. Over the years, I realized that chiropractic care is much more than pain. There are so many other wonderful “side effects.” I get to focus on health and well-being instead of pain and symptoms. I get to help babies be more comfortable with less constipation and fewer ear infections and help with nursing issues. I get to help pregnant moms have a more comfortable pregnancy and smooth and efficient labor and delivery. I now have built the practice of my dreams, treating whole families from as young as 2 days old to as old as 99 years old.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As many business owners know, owning your business is not always easy. Starting up in Kasson was easier than I expected. Kasson supports local businesses, and I have been so fortunate for that. The hardest things were having kids, owning my own business, being the only chiropractor and owner, having no maternity leave and no one paying me for my time off. During my first pregnancy, I had 2 other chiropractors fill in for me part-time, and I could only be gone for about 7 weeks. Not long enough. In my second pregnancy, I hired an associate chiropractor and could take 9 weeks, but again I had to pay his salary and not pay myself during that time.
As you know, we’re big fans of Elmore Family Chiropractic. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Elmore Family Chiropractic is an established chiropractic office in Kasson, MN. Our primary focus is kids and pregnant moms, but we serve the whole family. I want my office to feel warm and welcoming. Your kids are always welcome! I have extensive training in pediatrics and prenatal chiropractic care, and we cater to families. We have a family room that has a chalk wall, toys for the kids, a special table topper for kids’ adjustments, and a break in the table for pregnant bellies. I designed the room so there is nothing the kids can destroy so mom and dad can relax! Being in a small community, I want to be a resource. If they are pregnant for the first time, I want to support them and help build their birth team. I can align them with doula, midwives, and lactation consultants. I want to be their first stop if they struggle with an issue.
We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
I wouldn’t call myself a risk taker, but I know that risks must be made for change. It was a risk to open my practice in the first place, but I did the research, put in the work, and went full steam ahead. When I first opened my practice, I was more pain based. It was a challenge for me to take the first big step to change the conversation and escape the pain. I would say I’m okay with controlled risk!
