Today we’d like to introduce you to Maia Bickerstaff.
Hi Maia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I have always had a passion for art and illustration. My friends always told me I should capitalize on my talents and find a way to offer my designs to the public. I became interested in screen printing and blocked printing. Through this, I had a way to print on not just standard paper but clothing. I started printing my designs on shirts just for fun and wore them out. I would get stopped by people who wanted to purchase the shirts my friends, and I would wear. I decided to go into my business and have been building it since then.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a slow but steady journey. I had no idea how to run a business when I first started, but with every experience, I’ve been learning.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create original screen prints and put them onto shirts mostly. I also make quirky earrings and tote bags to accompany them. I will take on a commission for a painting every once in and while. When completing a commission, it’s crucial to be commutative with your patron while still allowing the artist process to express itself freely. This aspect is both the most challenging and rewarding.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Eating my red Crayola crayons like can Gogh eating his yellow oil paint.
