Today we’d like to introduce you to Preet Kanwal Dhaliwal.
Hi Preet Kanwal, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in northern India, in the nondescript city of Gurdaspur. I spent more than half of my life in dorms and hostels in different cities across the state for my education. I specialized in Periodontology, a branch of dentistry, and worked as a periodontist for 2.5 years. At this time, I knew I wanted to further my studies in the United States. By a twist of fate, I moved to Toronto (Canada) in the winter of 2019. This was my first tryst with minus double-digit temperatures. I started preparing to get my dental license in North America. I got accepted to the UMN school of dentistry last year in an international dentist program, a fast-track program, to get my licence. I moved to the Twin cities in Jan of this year only to witness and experience a cold unheard of. After the rough start to the program, I began to enjoy the city and experience what Minneapolis has to offer. I particularly like the jazz scene.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Haha, a smooth road is so overrated. I moved to Canada and eventually to the States all by myself. It surely has been a bumpy ride, but I would not have it any other way. From finding a place to live (ignore the bed bugs), a job that fits my skill set, staying sane while studying for exams and working full time, and spending huge amounts on the application process, it has been a struggle to say the least. As a newcomer, you ignore your mental and physical health, and sometimes I felt vulnerable due to my situation. Not having your loved ones close by, it’s a challenge to survive, but the drive to make it keeps you going. I also feel fortunate to have met wonderful people along the way.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an Internationally trained Periodontist currently pursuing a DDS program at UMN school of dentistry to get my dental license for both USA and Canada. Among my friends, I am also known for my creative side. I am adventurous and always open to learning and trying new things. My current obsession includes collecting ceramic/porcelain objects/plates. In my free time, while in twin cities I look forward to exploring more of the local culture and cuisine. I already visited a few local spots and liked them. In future, I wish to play an active role in the community and perhaps down the line plunge into politics.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I usually look for inspiration from real-life people I come across every day. I turn to God and my mother when things go out of hand. Quite often, they both give a quick fix to the problem. Most importantly, staying positive and patient in difficult situations helps. To continue my journey of self improvement, I try to read as often as I can. Currently, I am reading “48 laws of power”which I find quite interesting in parts. I find that I gravitate towards all different genres and try not to limit myself to just one.
