Rising Stars: Meet Brittany Williams of Oak Island, North Carolina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Williams.

Hi Brittany, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
In the beginning, I don’t think I ever wavered as a kid when asked, “what do you want to be when you grow up?”. My response was always wanting to be an artist, actress Etc. So I believe my story is one of an artist. It consists of excitement and disappointments, both in things that didn’t work out and things that did. It consists of many dreadful questions a lot of artists get “what are you gonna do with it?” in response to my degree choices. My response always was, “I’ll show you what I’m gonna do with it.” Sometimes, I knew what I meant when I said that, and other times It was quite literally in my body, running through my veins, and I spoke viscerally. Art and being an artist is something that I’ve always known I belonged to. I spent a lot of time in circles trying to figure out where I belonged in the art world creatively. You know, what would make me different? But I realized art is just about being you. I’ve been discouraged by a few and even went through a period that hindered my creative abilities in ways I never thought they would be. Years of work destroyed, seeing them broken in front of me took its toll on me. I’ve worked hard to rebuild a lot of things that broke. Not everyone is meant to be in your life and on the journey to the dreams you set for yourself. My story is still being lived, and sometimes you trust blindly, but when you have a bigger dream and vision. You realize that the blind feeling is you coming close to growing into the very things you dreamed of, and being in a place where you’re okay if things work out and if they don’t is a powerful place to be. It takes work to get there. However, it is beyond worth it. I already have moments of awe and gratitude because I find myself in moments I already dreamed of and never thought I’d live in.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Sometimes I wish I could say it was a smooth road. But if it was smooth, I don’t think the moments would be quite as worth it. A lot of what I enjoy about art is the many things I learn along the way. Both about myself and the world around me, frustrations and all. I spent a lot of time going in circles, focused on what would make me different as an artist. I spent a lot of time figuring out my style and who I am as an artist. They say an imitation is a form of flattery, but one of my fears as an artist has always been putting my work out and having it capitalized on in a way that’s morally just not quite right. When I started taking art more seriously, it seemed that the fear I knew was a reality. I’ve had a few run-ins with instances where I couldn’t quite say anything, but the inspirations were obvious. So I’ve had to overcome the fact that style vultures (what I call them) are a thing. But I can’t get anywhere hiding, and I have a lot left to create and do.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an artist of many things. I’m a visual artist specializing in painting (acrylic and watercolor), pen and ink, and wood-burning. As well as being an actress and a self-proclaimed writer who carries a journal everywhere they go. I love writing lyrics, one-liners, and ideas. You never know when migth inspire you. I’d say what sets me apart, what I’m most proud of and known for, is my fine art wood burning specialty. More specifically, my custom longboards and skateboards, as I’ve given myself the title of a custom board artist. It’s no secret I love to skate and surf, so I love to customize skateboards, surfboards, and boards of all kinds. Whether it’s a brand new one and you want to skate/surf it next week (maybe 2 weeks, to be generous), or it’s a wall hanger officially, and you want to commemorate the memories made with the board. I’m passionate about working with some of my favorite skate companies to create a line of B.Willi custom boards possibly. You never know. I got plans.

What do you think about happiness?
I’m happiest when I’m in nature, traveling, drinking iced coffee, and creating art. There are a lot of things that make me happy, but nothing compares to creating art. Whether it be a show you’ve co-written, a painting you’re working on with a whole new idea and concept, a new song you’ve written, a new wood burn design, a simple line drawing of a moment in time, commissions Etc. It all makes me happy because it teaches me something different. I’m happiest when I’m creatively stimulated.
