Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Snow.
Hi Brandon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I have always been interested in creating art. I’m from Atlanta and moved to the Twin Cities about 4 years ago. Once the pandemic hit, I had much more time to explore the mediums I was interested in. With so much time to kill, I thought it wasn’t a bad idea to try and build a small business. After the world re-opened, I was eager to make and share my art. That’s where I am today, eager to share my collage, Neon, and photography work with you all.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road worth taking is smooth, or at least that’s what I tell myself. I came to the cities alone, which made making connections a bit difficult. The pandemic was a major setback for most Americans. Finding space to learn Neon was a challenge as well. Luckily I stumbled upon Jon at Chicago Ave Fire Arts Center and signed up for his classes. The challenges always find a solution – they need time, effort, and thought.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work within the mediums of collage, Neon, and photography. Although I bounce around between these art forms, Neon is the newest art I have been experimenting with. I again have to thank Jon and CAFAC for creating a space to let a community of artists explore. I find that how the public and individuals react to Neon is special. Something is awe-inspiring about seeing a tube illuminated by an abundant element in our atmosphere. That being said, I am most proud of my first neon piece, “The Mystery Box” – an old Zenith TV that’s been gutted, painted, and had a neon question mark where the screen should be. All of which stand on a pedestal with the same chrome and red paint job.
Regarding things that set me apart, I try to create my art with the punk and hardcore ethos of DIY. These communities are about expression by any means and have shown me brotherhood and love. I try and remember that. I try to bring others into the fold and remind everyone if you build it, they will come. Ask no one and do it yourself – it’s better that way.
What matters most to you? Why?
The championing of the human spirit, we are all individuals experiencing this world separately and together. We all go through strife, and what matters is acknowledging your fellow humans and bringing them up. This world is abundant, you can help yourself, and you can help others too.
