Hidden Gems: Meet Emily Fickes of Verge Of Fantastic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Fickes.

Hi Emily, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I moved to Glenwood in 2017 for a “fresh start,” so to speak. I had some struggles and needed my family’s love and support. I was mentally and emotionally broken. I was starting over in life at age 36. Not knowing where life would lead me but just trusting that God had a plan for me. I started working a the local grocery store as a cashier, worked my way up to the bakery department, and then took over as bakery manager. I loved my job, the small-town atmosphere, and the people. But it was knowing that I wanted to own my own business. Not quite sure what that kind of business would be. My love for shopping and unique items played a part and my love for the local people and talent. That’s when I decided I wanted a store that would focus on local people supporting local people by showcasing their talents by selling their handmade items. I started as an arts and crafts consignment store with some collectibles and antiques. Now I have started buying direct wholesale from my consignors.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been an adventure for sure. Location is not the most ideal, and not having any experience in owning or running a store has been a daily learning curve. It’s a slow process. And, of course, there are always bumps, in some cases large potholes and barricades. But at the end of the day, if I tried my best to improve the store, I was doing something right.

As you know, we’re big fans of Verge Of Fantastic. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Handmade items by local Minnesota residents, there is truly something for everyone. We also feature a “kids corner” where kids 14 and under can sell things they make at no consignment fee. Also feature nostalgic collectibles and antiques. Many small businesses are just starting out trying to market their products. It’s a perfect place to buy a gift for that hard to buy for person—so many unique items for all ages.

Who else deserves credit for your story?
The person that deserves most, if not all, of the credit for making my dream a reality is Dean Paulson, my grandfather. He was not only my grandpa but my biggest support, my go-to for advice and knowledge, my best friend, my cheerleader, my mentor, and most of all, my hero. In November 2020, he passed away from Covid 19. I decided to name the store after him because whenever anyone would say, “Dean, how is ya doing?” His response would always be “RIGHT ON THE VERGE OF FANTASTIC “he always had an upbeat, positive attitude about life. And I always knew he would want me to follow my dreams.

Great story Emily! You on the right track! But someone said even if you are on the right track, if you stand still you’ll get run over! So keep giving it the gas! Proud of you!
