Life & Work with Allie McIntosh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allie McIntosh.

Hi Allie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name’s Allie McIntosh and I am a sixteen-year-old singer-songwriter, instrumentalist and producer. My love of music began to flourish when I was four years old. At this age, I began playing classical piano, and realized my passion for music. Then, at six years old, I picked up the violin. Subsequently, I added the viola when I was eight years old. I still practice and play my instruments very often. As for voice, I began training it classically at the age of 12, the same age at which I realized my love for songwriting. I had gone through a rough patch during middle school, and needed an outlet to heal those wounds, so I was inspired to write music and song lyrics. And that was the key event that led me to where I am today! I absolutely love writing songs and experimenting with different genres and topics.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As I mentioned, I experienced some intense bullying when I was in middle school, so I lost myself for a bit. But songwriting helped me solidify my identity and feel comfortable in my own skin. Now, I’m surrounded by caring people, many of whom I have bonded with thanks to our shared love of music.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have played at multiple venues throughout the Twin Cities, and am also currently working with some large-scale producers and artists in Los Angeles. I released my first EP at fourteen years old, and have released a couple of singles since that time. Something interesting about me is that I have perfect pitch, meaning that I can produce the correct pitch of a note without needing to hear it beforehand. I also have Synesthesia, meaning I experience notes as colors and sometimes even flavors. For example, G major is my least favorite key, so it’s no surprise that I taste V8 juice when I hear it. (I’m not a fan of V8 juice, by the way!)

I also mentor other students that I had the opportunity to meet through my music school, MacPhail’s, buddy program. I enjoy helping them find and grow their love for music, as I also had a student mentor when I was young and enjoyed my time with her greatly.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I am currently working both locally and in California with some big names, so I simply hope to keep pursuing my dream of sharing my music with a group of people who appreciate and enjoy it! I want my music to touch the hearts of those who hear it.
