Meet Jon Heyesen of Arbor Wood Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Heyesen.

Hi Jon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Having had both interest and access to personal computers in my formative years, my career began in the tech industry where I helped develop growth strategies for a number of technology providers. My ability to create scalable business models around complex products and services opened the door to pursue another passion of mine; architecture, design, and sustainability. I am currently a principal in Intectural – a distributor of premium architectural materials – as well as the Co-Founder and CEO of Arbor Wood Co., a Minnesota-based producer of thermally modified wood siding, decking and millwork. We are on the path towards elevating an entire industry and changing the way we approach the built environment; an increasingly important cause given the impact that climate change is having on our planet.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been many struggles, from product development to testing and of course, market penetration. Part of our challenge (and current initiatives) is to elevate an entire industry and change the way people think about building in the United States. This is as much about education and standardization as it is about sales and marketing.

As you know, we’re big fans of Arbor Wood Co.. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Arbor Wood Co. was born out of an architectural materials distribution company with a focus on sustainability, and informed via an academic partnership with the University of Minnesota Duluth Natural Resources Research Institute. We have been at the vanguard of bringing European technology to the United States, and developing a range of products around this chemical-free process. We have recently received a significant capital investment which is enabling us to build a vertically-integrated, state-of-the-art production facility here in Minnesota.
