Rising Stars: Meet Kami Dawn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kami Dawn.

Hi Kami, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out in the beauty industry right after high school. After doing hair for a few years, I decided I had more interest in learning about skin care. I was struggling with my self-esteem due to adult acne and melasma and I wanted to figure out how I could improve it and also help other people with the same problem. After receiving my aesthetics license, I decided I wanted to continue to learn and I took a class for aesthetics in the medical field. I feel that that’s important to be a well-rounded aesthetician— learning everything from the holistic approach of facials and natural skincare to a medical approach with lasers, injectables, and even surgery. I’ve been an aesthetician for over 15 years and I started my own business three years ago at the beginning of Covid.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting my own business at the beginning of Covid wasn’t an ideal situation. I had always managed and worked for other people’s businesses and in March 2020 I had been hired for a new position with a national company that does laser treatments. One week before I was supposed to fly out to Florida for their corporate training, the position was cut because of the pandemic. So I was left without a job and wasn’t certain what to do. But I had a realization that I had false sense of security working for someone else and I should build my own business.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I would say the level of service I provide to my clients. When I’m doing facials, I always get compliments that it’s the best facial massage that they’ve ever had. I also make sure to develop regimens that work for my clients for their home skincare routine because that’s what you’re using everyday even if you can’t get in to see me very often. If you’re putting the right things on your skin and using them correctly, you can see big improvements. I offer a wide range of services so I have clients that come in just for brow maintenance such as waxing or tinting as well as people that do full skin revision programs. I also offer permanent makeup such as brows, eyeliner, lip color, scar revision, scar camouflage and areola restoration.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
