Today we’d like to introduce you to Tolzy Sound.
Hello Tolzy Sound, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up, I always had an interest in music and performing. In high school, I acted in three stage plays and one musical. I was also part of a local choir. I am a DJ but I identify as an artist. Over the years I have released & produced music, written poems & spoken word, and have written songs for other artists. I have several genres of music – whether indie, hip-hop, R&B, alternative rock, alternative R&B, afro beats, alternative hip-hop, or house to name a few
My diverse interactions with music in different forms have really contributed to my being one of the fastest-growing local DJs in Minneapolis. For me, being a DJ is the perfect job. Being paid to play music I love and helping curate an atmosphere where others enjoy themselves is amazing.
I started experimenting with DJing in 2011 when I made my first mix at 13 years on virtual DJ. In college, I found myself on the aux to DJ several house parties and kickbacks. In July 2022 is when I started taking DJing officially. I count that as the official time because that was when I invested time and money into perfecting my craft. I haven’t looked back since then.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road for me but I see obstacles are avenues for me to grow. As an independent DJ, I had to find funds to be able to purchase equipment.
It also took several hours to fine-tune my craft but I persevered. I also have bad anxiety so getting over that when I play in a large & unfamiliar setting was and is still a struggle but I have managed to overcome it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an artist. I specialize in DJing, and writing music, and poems.
I am known for the unique and diverse music I play. What sets me out from other DJs is that I genuinely love several genres of music so it makes it easy to play in different settings.
I am most proud of the feedback I receive from the audience in many different settings. After some gigs, I walk away with several people in the audience giving me direct tips! I feel that as a DJ, good feedback from the audience is a great reflection of your work. Not everyone will like every set I play but if I can genuinely make decent people have a great time, my day is made.
