Conversations with Meagan Pass

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meagan Pass.

Hi Meagan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I grew up loving to bake and paint. There’s something about working with my hands that puts me at ease and grounds me. I see a finished canvas or a pile of cookies as a physical manifestation of my love and creativity.

I went to college at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and graduated with a degree in Human Resources. While in college, I was lucky enough to get an internship in Learning and Development and realized that I had a passion for seeing people learn. Have you ever seen someone’s eyes light up with excitement when they “get” something? It’s a gratifying feeling. I realized I wanted to help others learn and grow. I’ve been lucky enough to work in that world for 5 years now.

But, something has been missing for those past five years. I haven’t been baking or painting as much. I’ve been focusing on growing my career. During college, I discovered a passion for candles. There are not a lot of ways to elevate a cheap apartment into a cozy living space like a candle can. I’ve burned many a candle since then, relishing in the scents, and the way the glow casts softly throughout a room.

Within the last couple of years, I discovered the toxicity of fragrances in personal care and home fragrances. Unfortunately, there’s not much regulation in the United States regarding what is a “fragrance” and what isn’t. I was horrified to learn that the candles that I’d been burning were terrible for my health. That’s how Saudade Home Co was born! I wanted to create candles that were luxurious and non-toxic.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It took me a long time to realize that *I* could create and manufacture candles and have my own business. How could I? I battled a lot of imposter syndrome until ultimately I realized that I was the one stopping myself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m proud that my candles are hand poured in small batches, with intense care and love put into each candle. It’s just me running my business right now, on top of working full-time.

It can be a lot to balance sometimes, but I love that I get to use two sides of myself: practical Meagan in my day job, and creative Meagan with Saudade Home Co. I’m proud to offer products that can transform your space, without risking your health.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I’d like to say that my community is incredibly important to my success. Without them, I couldn’t have conquered my feelings of inadequacy to actually start my business.

Then, when I started, my community embraced Saudade Home Co, and helped sell out my products on my first launch! They still participate in polls and ideas for collections on social media, and the vibrancy that they create keeps me going.
