Rising Stars: Meet Jenna Gorman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna Gorman.

Hi Jenna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Ever since I was a little girl helping my mom in the kitchen, I’ve always loved cooking. When I became a mom to two boys, I was eager to pass down the memories and traditions of cooking together.

As a former food chemist turned high school chemistry teacher, I decided to leave the profession to stay home with my boys. I was so thankful that I had the opportunity to spend this time with them as they grew up. While I wouldn’t have changed being a stay-at-home mom for anything, I found myself yearning for something that was truly my own.

When I broached the subject with my husband, he immediately said “You should start a food blog. You love cooking.

You love cooking with the boys. You love talking about food. You love connecting with people. You love teaching. It’s perfect!”

So, that’s how Land of 10,000 Recipes was born. On a pontoon, no less, in the middle of one of Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Knowing little to nothing about building a website, food photography, SEO, and all the stuff that comes with a food blog made for quite an uphill battle.

When I first started Land of 10,000 Recipes 3 years ago, I didn’t even have Instagram. Now, Instagram is an integral part of my business and how I communicate with my followers about my latest recipes and virtual cooking classes.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Land of 10,000 Recipes is a food blog, but it’s so much more than that. Sure, I share delicious recipes that you will look at and think YUM, I want to make that! But, I want to go beyond making inspiring recipes. I want to inspire parents to get their kids involved in the kitchen.

As a chemist and former teacher, I recognize the ample learning opportunities that cooking can provide. Following a recipe allows a kid to practice reading. Measuring 2.5 cups of flour allows a kid to practice math. Waiting for cookies to bake allows a kid to practice patience.

Not only can all these lessons be learned in the kitchen, but so many memories can be created. Food is connection and I really want to be the bridge that allows families to connect.

One way that I have done this is by offering Virtual Cooking Classes for Kids. I have done everything from Saturday brunch to weekday lunch to Sunday Supper. These have been really popular and have been so much fun for adults and children.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that Minnesotans embrace the cold.

If you are going to live here, you know it’s going to be a solid 5 months (at a minimum of below-freezing temperatures). If you just complain about it, you are going to be miserable. So, you might as well embrace it and enjoy it!

Pricing:

  • Virtual Cooking Class: $20
