Today we’d like to introduce you to Tameca Williams.
Hi Tameca, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
The Black Girl Social Club was born right before New Year’s Eve 2019. Our founder Carmen Jones founded the Atlanta Chapter in 2019.
A year later the Minneapolis Chapter was established on August 17th, 2020 beginning with a normal conversation with one of our first Co-presidents Chartel Hawkins and her sister chatting. About this amazing organization for black women. The thought of a safe space for black women to let their hair down amongst other black women piqued Chartel’s interest. While the organization was just beginning another woman named Gracie George, our other original Co-President, was interested in the same idea of bringing these two ladies together. So on August 2020, Minneapolis joined the 80+ chapters that make up The Black Girl Social Club. A year later I took over as co-president now vice president of the Minneapolis chapter. Going into my third year leading this precious gem of sisterhood and great memories. Our chapter has not only curated some amazing events around the twin cities for our members. We also volunteer for some equally amazing community-based programs that assist families in need around the twin cities.
The black girl social club’s mission is to create a safe space for Black women and change the narrative about how Black women interact with one another. We are a modern-day social club determined to bring back the art of face-to-face communication, away from our phones, and off of the internet. We’re tackling mental, physical, and emotional health as a community while building amazing relationships. We are looking to fill a void for Black women in cities worldwide.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our biggest challenge was trying to honor the goal of our chapter while dealing with Covid restrictions and civil unrest. With 40+ members at the time.
It was difficult to not only find venues to host our events but also accept the number that came with us. However, the amazing women that make up the Minneapolis chapter opened up their homes and provided resources so that our chapter would continue to thrive.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The Black Girl Social Club has assisted in collecting donations for Tubman back to school and self-care drive. We have volunteered with special adventures a nonprofit organization that helps special needs, adults. And most recently we’ve partnered with the Jeremiah program who serves young women with children.
Who is breaking the poverty barriers by providing them with safe, affordable housing and supporting them through their educational journey in college? I am most proud of the many ways BGSC pulls together to help in the community and each other. What sets us apart is that we are changing the ways society sees black women interact with one another. While changing the way we see ourselves.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Although we’re a social club, what has been built within Black Girl Social Club is truly an extension of family nationally. The bond doesn’t just stop here in the twin cities. The love includes all 80+ chapters around the globe.
