Check Out Troy Foss’ Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Troy Foss.

Hi Troy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My music story starts in High School where I was a drummer in multiple bands. I was always fascinated with the recording process and bought my first 4 track tape machine in high school. From this love of recording, I went on to pursue a degree in Recording Arts from Full Sail Real World Education, in Winter Park Florida. After graduating from Full Sail, I moved to Los Angeles to further pursue recording.

In Los Angeles, I got the opportunity to work with some of the best recording and mixing engineers along with other very talented musicians. In 2006, I started Supple Studios in Bemidji, MN. Bringing my LA recording knowledge with me I have grown Supple Studios from a very humble recording service out of my car to a full-service facility with the latest recording technology.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think starting any business has its challenges along the way. Building a recording studio in Northern Minnesota has its challenges as well. I fought some criticism in the early days of building a studio, saying that there wasn’t enough work to keep something like that open here.

I’m glad that we have had wonderful support and with re-investing profits back into the studio, I believe that we have a world-class recording studio right in the heart of vacation country. We now have people that travel here to record and mix in the beautiful Northwoods. When Covid hit, we really had a challenge when you could no longer be in close contact. It shut us down for many months. During those times we really focused on our online mixing and mastering services. There were more artists than ever stuck at home recording in their rooms.

We now have a great platform for them to send those tracks online to the studio to still have them mixed in a professional mix room. It’s still a great way to work with artists today that are from a distance away, but still want the studio sound to their tracks.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Supple Studios is an audio recording studio that is a haven for artists of many different genres. We are proud to offer a comfortable recording environment where artists can feel free to create while having the latest in recording technology at their disposal. We love taking a recording project from an idea in an artist’s head to releasing it to the world for their fans to hear.

Always working closely with the artist and doing what is right for the song. Our online mixing and mastering services have been another great tool for artists to take advantage of. We can also take a song idea and hire studio musicians to fulfill a production. “Hear the Difference” is our tagline, and we strive to bring the best every day.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’m constantly learning new production techniques from other mixing engineers and producers. The great thing about audio is there is always something new to learn, a new plugin or software, or new hardware to explore. A great resource for mixing and production is Produce Like a Pro, with mentor Warren Huart.

You will usually find me reading books by Simon Sinek or Adam Grant. Another great book on audio is from Bruce Swedien, called Make Mine Music.
