Today we’d like to introduce you to De’Angilo Funches.
Hi De’Angilo, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Rochester, MN, with my 4 brothers raised by a single mother. Growing up, I had a rough childhood; I was exposed to drugs & alcohol abuse at a very young age. So entertainment became an escape. For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be an entertainer, dreaming of being like the people on TV. They seemed larger than life. Plus, I loved to sing & dance; however, I never saw those being realistic career goals. I was determined to find my thing!
I was introduced to standup comedy at 18, soon after graduating high school. My first time doing standup was in 2013 at Goonies Comedy Club. After my first open mic, I was in love with standup. I knew that I was home. I found my thing! From there, I spent the next few years learning & working on my craft. I worked my way through the ranks of the club. Networking with as many comedians as possible and tried to be as visible as I could. The years of work have helped me to create a name for myself on the MN comedy scene. I was opening the doors for me to expand my comedic talent to other entertainment fields, allowing me to travel the country and overseas.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has not been smooth, learning to be comfortable in your skin and overcome your insecurities and criticisms. As my career has progressed, new struggles present themselves in the form of distractions. I am learning how to navigate them as they come.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a standup comedian. I love the ability to come into a room and make everybody focus on one thing, disarm themselves from everything going on in the world, and enjoy a genuine laugh—I’m mostly known for my open embrace on stage mixed with a fast-paced comedy style. I pride myself on being from a place with limited opportunities & not letting it stop me. I have tried to model my career behind the idea that there is more than one way to get things done. While I don’t have the same opportunities & market as many of the comedians from the metro Twin Cities or bigger markets, it hasn’t stifled my ability to grow and Network. I hope the opportunities I create for myself open a path for other aspiring comedians/entertainers. I wanted to show that it doesn’t matter where you’re from that. As long as you’re willing to find a way, anything is possible!
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I have a deep appreciation for history and poetry.
