Check Out Melissa Lunde’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Lunde.

Hi Melissa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a St. Cloud native and went to beauty school in the late 90s. I moved to the Minneapolis area, where I worked in various salons, including Rocco Altobelli, where I was a color specialist for a few years. After starting my family, I moved back to the St Cloud area about 14 years ago and have been here since. Since having kids, I became concerned about the excess toxins in our everyday life, which prompted me to seek out healthier alternatives to many things, such as cleaning supplies, food sources, and personal care products. At this point, I was still employed at a salon, and the reality of being around so many harsh chemicals regularly was a big concern for not only myself but my clients. I moved to a salon in the area that used non-toxic and plant-based products and used a color line that is ammonia-free, PPD-free, and fume free. The transition to the clean hair color/products was great, but the new salon I was at wasn’t a good fit, so I got my manager’s license and started my own business! After renting a studio for a couple of years, I transitioned to an in-home salon studio, where I’ve been for the last year. I found the most amazing home that had an absolutely perfect addition for a salon. With a little renovation, it has been transformed into a tranquil salon studio where my clients can experience a fresh, breathable space without the offensive chemical salon smell. I feel blessed to have an amazing clientele that feels like friends and family. And it brings me so much joy knowing I get to be creative and use my talents to help them feel their best and lessen their toxic load with healthier alternative haircare products and colors.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a smooth road?
I started Honeycomb Hair Studio in October of 2019; that next March shut, the salon industry was down for 3 months due to the pandemic. That was a hard time and had me question my choice to be my own boss. I managed to make it through, and my business has thrived. It helped me see how truly amazing my clients were, as many of them bought gift cards and products when I was out of work, and one amazing woman even bought my family groceries.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
It is an amazing gift every day to do something I am passionate about that lets my creative juices flow and helps make people feel better. My passion for clean living and my love of hair artistry came together. It is a dream come true. I love all aspects of being a hairstylist, but I have a special love for hair coloring. Big makeovers are always fun, but giving clients subtle and natural looks is very satisfying. I specialize in vivid hair colors and am always up for the challenge of good corrective color. Nothing is more satisfying than taking someone’s color from disaster to dazzling! Something I never expected in all my years doing hair is the connections and relationships I have made with my clients. My work never feels like work. I get to hang out with friends and be an artist. How cool is that?!

Alright, before we go, can you talk to us a bit about how people can work, collaborate, or support you?
My main goal was to bring the community a healthier alternative to haircare. I always seek to collaborate with local wellness-centered businesses, whether it be a referral program, a fundraiser, or a benefit where more people can be made aware of holistic services in the area.
