Community Highlights: Meet Maria Serbus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Serbus.

Hi Maria, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always had a desire to help others. My mom was a nurse and I grew up watching her help others and love her career.  I have also felt very fortunate from an early age.

I was adopted from Guatemala as a baby and grew up in SW Minnesota –2 locations with very different living conditions.  I learned from a young age about my history/heritage and on a mission trip in 2008 I realized the opportunities afforded to me growing up in Minnesota and I wanted to make the most of it – by impacting others in a positive way.

I obtained my Masters in Occupational Therapy degree in 2014 in Rochester, MN. I spent 7 years exploring different settings to help others live their lives to their fullest potential – nursing home, independent living, Mayo Clinic hospital – inpatient and outpatient rehab – and community-based rehab.

I learned so much in those years. I also never felt the spark. The passion. The love & energy to get up each day to make a difference. On the outside, I know I was impacting lives in each setting. But inside – I asked myself – what next? Is this it? I began my own emotional self awareness journey. I wanted to address my type-A anxious tendencies and began working with a holistic OT from the cities. This was the beginning of finding my passion in holistic modalities to enrich and benefit the lives of “everyday-ordinary” people. I saw the difference meditation and mind-body techniques made in my life. I wanted to bring this to other women who were maybe struggling with stress, burnout, overwhelm, and anxiousness—women who were juggling all the plates, chasing dreams, but still not FEELING their best. In 2015 an idea to start my own business was born. It took another 3-4 years to obtain the necessary certifications, skillset, and confidence to do this.

In 2021 – Grounded Evolution, LLC was born and today my business evolves into a more personal brand – Maria Serbus, LLC.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, I wouldn’t describe it as a smooth road.  It has felt windy & very uncertain at times and I think that’s how it was supposed to be for me.  I feel my own winded uncertain journey helps me connect with those I want to help most – those trying to find themselves and their passion in life.

I think in order to even consider entrepreneurship and discover my passion that is now my business – I needed to face my own shadows. My anxiety had turned into panic attacks my freshman-sophomore year of college. I was used to school coming fairly easy to me. But I struggled with chemistry/math based courses – on top of juggling relationships & extracurriculars and it felt too much. I had to first figure out my own stuff and what methods worked to help me shift out of stress mode.

I also realized I had to face my own limiting beliefs. I needed to face what might hold me back. I am grateful to my amazing therapist/IFS coach Angie Star and my Energy healer – Marie Neher.

Other challenges – I didn’t know business. And I can lose my attention REAL FAST (thank you ADHD brain). So while I had a lot of excitement, energy, and passion to bring to my business – I also was going to need real discipline to learn a new trade – the business/finance/marketing side.

I’ve learned a lot in year 1 and I’ve learned it’s OK to lean in to support and guidance from the “experts”. I don’t need to know it all.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Previously known as Grounded Evolution, LLC — transitioning to Maria Serbus, LCC.

I firmly believe that everyone can evolve into their highest self – the self that enjoys their life, lives and leads with heart, and can chase their dreams.

However, I also think people need to be willing to face the shadows, the limiting beliefs, dig into the tough stuff and get comfortable with their inner self and what calms and grounds them in order to find that success and inner peace.

I’ve built a business around helping individuals find that success & inner peace.

Maria Serbus LLC provides – 1 on 1 coaching, group workshops, public speaking presentations, online masterclasses & soon to be other tangible products – to help people rise and thrive through life’s ups and downs. I specialize in stress and anxiety reduction skills, resilience building, and helping people shift into more peace, joy, and calm.

My current focus and business offerings are for busy on the go, motivated, driven women. These women are chasing their dreams & may be tied to hustle culture. They struggle with being still. I help these women calm their chaos.

I use science-backed effective strategies to ground & calm women’s nervous systems to shift out of stress mode so they can enjoy their life now.

I have experience in offering these services to everyday on the go women, entrepreneurs, leaders, to people struggling with anxiety, depression, ADHD, and complex trauma.

I have specialty certifications in anxiety management, biofeedback professional (through HeartMath) and somatic interventions for complex trauma.

I believe in access to mental health, emotional wellness, stress reduction, and resilience-building services for ALL.

And I also enjoy working within partnerships and collaborations with other mental health and holistic wellness providers.

What does success mean to you?
My own success – for this business – would be to reach women, children, teens, + more to provide emotional wellness & resilience services. To show people there is a WAY to work through stress, anxiety, and overwhelm instead of shoving it down.

Another success for me would be making enough impact so that I leave this world a better place for my son. When people can show up and get to know themselves, and improve their own emotional wellness, we can positively impact families, and workplaces.  More people chase their dreams, work in their zone of passion and genius so that the home & workplace can be less toxic and hostile and more inclusive, compassionate, and supportive to ALL.
