Community Highlights: Meet Ryan Dick of EverWell Primary Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Dick.

Hi Ryan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always known (ok, since 7th grade) known that I wanted to be a family doctor. And not any kind of family doctor- but the “old school” kind. The kind of doctor who makes their patients feel truly heard. I have done everything within my power the last 30 years to be that kind of professional. I have treated patients in a traditional practice for about 20 years and now have been in my solo “old school” doctor practice for almost 5 months at EverWell Primary Care. I am so very proud to have a beautiful space that I can call my own- and so grateful for the team that has been the true power behind its creation.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t know that most providers would frequently consider their education or professional paths “easy”. I was the kind of student that needed to study 10 to 15 hours a day for 7 days a week. That started in highschool, and never changed in college, med school, or residency.

When I graduated as a new doctor, I had spent a great deal of my first 5 years earning the trust of young families in order to practice obstetrics. As a family medicine doctor who delivered babies, it was a culture shift for many of my patients to consider a male provider. Women should be able to choose whichever provider they want for their delivery- and many found that a male provider could be a great choice for them and their family.

More recently, I found that I was not able to keep up with the unusual work load of continuously seeing more and more patients- and then keeping up with the paperwork and the phone calls too. This is not a unique problem- but chose a very unique way to address it. I chose a new medical model called Direct Primary Care. It serves my soul and helps me care for my patients. It has brough me back to “old school medicine”- where a patient can call me any hour of the night and I can fix most problems that were forcing them to the urgent care or emergency department. It was super scary starting my own clinic and my own business… and it’s been an insane amount of work. But I am hoping that it will provide a bright light in patient care- where there is so much frustration and so many challenges.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
It is a family medicine direct primary care clinic. We are trying to get back to the roots of what medicine looked like 50 or 60 years ago: easy access, long appointments, efficient quick phone calls with real answers.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Direct Primary Care is the true next model of medicine. A few years back it became a major force in states such as Wisconsin, Florida, and Texas… the trend is going to be HUGE in all 50 states in the very near future.
