Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Schmitt.
Hi Tyler, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In 2018 Growing Power went bankrupt and my father stepped in to buy the urban farm from the city of Milwaukee and keep operations going for the community. In 2019 we started Ultimate Farm Collaborative Inc. as a design agency to look over the farmers on site, as well as care for and research plants and animals including lake perch, goats, chickens and bees. Our job was to redesign a famously liked model which went bankrupt as well as rebrand the urban farm into a new public image which we named The Collaborative Farm. Later in 2019 we launched a record label to organize creative energy around The Collaborative Farm. One of the greenhouses was redesigned into a music venue and an annual music festival was hosted on The Collaborative Farm from 2020 – 2024 called The Farm Music Festival. Over the years several thriving communities of farmers grew food locally, gathered for educational reasons, and helped teach high school students how to grow food with local non-profits. In 2021 my father Tom started a non-profit called Made For Love Inc. shortly before he passed from a heart attack. The loss was felt on many levels as we was a coach, mentor, business partner and a great dad. In 2025 The Collaborative Farm was sold due to lack of income and city pressure to keep the site up to code. Once the last remaining agriculture coded site in Milwaukee The Collaborative Farm is still zoned for a general planned development of a 5-story vertical farm. Our team moved to Minneapolis back to the city of my alma moder St. Thomas in hopes of getting a footing in a new city and extending our reach across the Midwest.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overseeing a community of farmers was sometimes very fulfilling and sometimes chaotic. The transition of control over the site from the former Ceo to my father and myself was also filled with some stressful interactions. The job was tricky in transitioning a great brand into a completely different business model and starting a non-profit to align with the demand of the community. The energy of The Collaborative Farm was very creative and divine at times so the road was smooth and it was a great lifestyle having an urban farm to work at every day. Losing my father from this earth was hard however he has stayed with me and taught lessons even in the years after his passing. Selling the farm was also unexpected and is still a work in progress as we would like to see that community succeed going forward.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Ultimate Farm Collaborative Inc.?
Ultimate Farm Collaborative Inc. is known for the public reputation of The Collaborative Farm, and now that we are moving to Minneapolis we would like to start similar models in the Twin cities and be known for organizing thriving communities of urban farmers. Once a thriving community of urban farmers is created we can implement the Collab Official (Record Label) community. We had the pleasure of working on a world class urban farm and have seen how good it can be. We are proud of our brands morality in its efforts to share information about sustainable lifestyles, architecture and ways to develop our cities to coexist with nature. Our company offers services to install solar now, and we are open to joining a community development project which may lead into a sustainable architecture development. We know how systems work and how impactful a small inner community can ripple and change a city, country, and even make global change. We work with politicians and can align our services to help a city at large make societal plays to improve quality of life for their residents.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something surprising most people may not know about me is that my mind is programmed to be open. Inspired by VR, nasa, and the Cia. In 2023, 2024, and 2025 time was spent memorizing how to say yes in every language as well as how to say love in every language. While memorizing these very powerful words simultaneously working with plants and animals everyday somewhat magical abilities related to telepathy and enhanced sensory perceptions were experienced. the process is still ongoing and as a way to keep things entertaining each way to say yes was paired with senses and different things in the world such as water and fire. My thoughts are paired with the word yes and the word yes acts as a key to reading my mind. There are several other keys and pairings within my mind, the words yes, and the words love.
