Daily Inspiration: Meet LaRhea Perkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaRhea Perkins.

Hi LaRhea, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello, my name is LaRhea Perkins and I am the owner of Ray2Cozy, an online business that provides unique and cozy home décor and gifts. Aside from being a business owner, I’m a single mother to three beautiful children, a college graduate, an educator of seven years, and a traveler. I first thought of my business when I was working at Minneapolis Public Schools. Summer break was approaching and I was overwhelmed with finding a part time job to work during the summer months to support my little family. I sat up late that night, brainstorming on my creativity and turning my ideas into business plans. When I first thought of Ray2Cozy, I thought about only making blankets and pillows. But my passion for home décor and comfort wouldn’t let me stop there. During my research of two years, I learned about epoxy resin, how to use it, its durability, and how it could be used for many crafts. I created a power point from all the notes in my phone and notebooks then two months later, I purchased my first resin kit and started crafting. I brought my ideas to my children first because I wanted them to see me chasing after my goals and dreams no matter how many obstacles came my way. Even though they were young when I showed them the slideshow, they now see their mommy, working on a business that she created by herself. A business that is providing for them, along with security to a job they can one day work at. The products I chose to sell, show my creativity and passion for my business. Each product will stand out in any room or office space, bringing comfort, glam, class, and uniqueness with it, When you shop with Ray2Cozy, you are not only supporting a black-owned business, you are supporting a family and supporting my dreams.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business is never easy and I didn’t want to rush into things but I did when it came close to my opening date back in October of 2020. A close friend of mine kept telling me I could create my own website or he could walk me through the steps of creating the website. I didn’t want to do that because it sounded like so much work and I’ve always seen other business owners advertise about how they can create websites and logos for other business owners. And as a single mother, I work full time outside of my business and I like to spend a lot of time with my children. I thought, creating a website by myself would take away the time I set aside for my children and interrupt everything I already had going on. I ended up paying someone a nice amount of money to do my website, thinking she knew my vision but I was wrong and I was highly disappointed in the outcome. I cried for a week straight every time I went onto my website because I didn’t like the results and I felt as if I got scammed out of money that could’ve been used for my business or household. After staying up late one night, I created a new website and rearranged everything. From that day forward, I promised myself I would try to do things by myself first before I pay someone else to do it. It was a big lesson learned.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Ray2Cozy, you can browse from a selection of resin crafts, candles, vases, and fleece blankets. Every item is made with love and packaged with care. I have added a Ray2Cozy collection with items that are made with specific mica powder colors. I also have a section for custom products, where customers can customize any product to fit their home or office from a variety of colors. Ray2Cozy Candles offer three scents and each scent is a top seller! A few other hot products at Ray2Cozy are the Wine Racks and Décor Trays. Paired together, these products are perfect for any gathering, gift, garden party, or décor for your drinking station. Ray2Cozy fleece blankets and pillows are perfect for traveling, staying out, snuggling up on the couch for a movie night, on the patio to stay warm in the fall, and on your bed to keep you extra cozy in the winter. Fleece blankets will be back available on August 13th, 2022 at my fourth pop up shop or available online on the website.

My Glam vases make every room pop and can hold 3 bundles of flowers, real or artificial. Any coaster that I make can be used to protect your tables from condensation, as well as a jewelry holder, or décor plaques. Décor words are perfect to describe your home or your family, as well as block letters which can also be used to spell a name, business name, or initials. My body and 4 face sculptures are perfect for any room décor, watch or bracelet holder or as a bookstand on a bookshelf. And all smoke accessories are perfect for all smokers!

Overall, I am very proud of my product list. I chose these products because I wanted to bring uniqueness to other people’s homes which make my business different from others. It took me some time to grow my inventory but my hard work is paying off. This is still just the beginning of Ray2Cozy!

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is my children. I have three and without them, I don’t think I would have gotten this far in life and gone so hard in my business. They motivate me so much. Every day I’m a better person because of them. Every day, I am learning from them. Every day I am growing in all aspects of life because of them. They are the reason I became my own boss, they are the reason I keep moving forward in life no matter the obstacles I face. With the support of my business, I am continuing to make our family dreams come true, and the greatest legacy I can leave my children besides my business is happy memories.
