Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Sheena Sikorski.
Hi Dr. Sikorski, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Senior year of high school, I discovered the field of psychology and the bountiful opportunities it holds. Since that time in 2004, I dedicated my educational journey to nurturing my love of psychology, which culminated in a doctorate degree earned in 2016. After graduating with my doctorate, I worked in a number of settings. Just over a month ago, I left my full-time job on an inpatient psychiatric unit to pursue my solo private practice in the heart of Minneapolis. Being able to be my own boss is the best and most rewarding thing I’ve done to date!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count how many times I thought about quitting or giving up on my goals throughout the years it took to get where I am today in my life and business. Whether we like it or not, self-doubt is an inevitable part of life and for the longest time, I let it cloud my goals, hopes, and dreams. During my doctoral program, I silently struggled with severe anxiety, imposter syndrome, and shame. I didn’t think I could hack it has a psychologist and felt like a complete fraud. I masked my authentic self and tried to be what I thought others wanted me to be so I’d be liked and accepted. When I finally sought my own therapy and learned to accept my quirky self, it gave me the opportunity to hone my gifts as a psychologist and connect with my ideal clients. Without a doubt, being authentic has enabled my private practice to flourish and attract my dream clients! Hooray for therapy and self-reflection!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I specialize in working with Millennial and Gen Z females who are high-achievers. Being a high achiever definitely has its benefits, though it can come with drawbacks, too. Oftentimes these drawbacks can manifest by experiencing high anxiety, perfectionism, body image concerns, self-critical thoughts, burnout, and people-pleasing. I help clients learn to embody a compassionate version of themselves and help them live a more balanced, authentic life. I absolutely love working with this population because they are so highly motivated, intelligent, and eager to learn more effective strategies to cope. It’s not uncommon for my clients to experience massive shifts to longstanding, ineffective patterns of living within a few sessions.
I hear time and time again from clients how much they appreciate my approach to therapy. I am warm and laid back, yet also provide a structured format that involves doing homework assignments between weekly therapy sessions. The reality is much of the work is done outside the therapy session and I’m simply a guide sharing my knowledge with them so they can finally be the person they’ve desired for so long.
My 2020 brand redesign has been a complete GAME CHANGER. My brand strategist and web designer, Ariel, perfectly captured my personality within my website and the website copy speaks directly to my ideal client. I get daily requests from my ideal clients to ask about working together and I have her to thank for this massive transformation because I used to hear crickets! Prospective clients are welcome to set up a free 15-minute consultation with me to make sure we’re a good fit to work together. To do this, they can visit my website and request a consultation or send an email to see if I’m accepting new clients.
For those of you who are curious, my brand and website designer can be found on IG- @byarielco. You guarantee you will be so inspired by her beautiful work!
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
There are so many wonderful qualities about Minneapolis! The Minneapolis scene for electronic music is fantastic. There are a couple of promotion companies that bring in world-renowned DJs, like Above and Beyond. Locally owned coffee shops are also my jam and Minneapolis has no shortage of those! I’m obsessed with oat milk iced mochas which are great for my taste buds, but bad for my bank account. The restaurant scene here is also stellar- some of my favorites are Snack Bar, Tilia, Bar La Grassa, and Runyon’s.
Being that I was born and raised in Orlando, FL, I still can’t come to terms with snowfall that occurs late into springtime. By the time March rolls around, I’m ready for budding trees and green grass.
