Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Lee.
Hi Michael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In the heart of Minnesota, in the suburb of Eden Prairie, friends and family passionate about Japanese cuisine saw an opportunity: to bring the authentic spirit of “yakiniku” (Japanese grilled-meats) dining into a warm, stylish and interactive setting for their local community.
They chose the name Gyu-Mai (written in Japanese as 牛舞) which literally translates to “Cow Dance”. The name was selected to evoke the celebration of premium beef and the convivial spirit of table-grilling together. This name reflects our “passion for food, joy, and togetherness, inspired by the artful rhythm of grilling and sharing.”
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Premium Japanese BBQ relies on high-quality meats, especially imported Wagyu or domestic American Wagyu. Building those supplier relationships — and finding seafood that meets Japanese standards — wasn’t easy.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
It’s located in Eden Prairie, Minnesota (8251 Flying Cloud Dr, Ste 3040).
The concept: you dine at a table equipped with your own smokeless grill and cook selected meats, seafood and vegetables yourself — the classic Japanese yakiniku experience.
A focus on premium ingredients: We serve high-quality meats (including A5 Wagyu), fresh seafood, and traditional Japanese sides.
Full bar with curated Japanese sake, signature cocktails and beers — the drink side is part of the elevated experience.
Modern, upscale ambiance — sleek but welcoming, making it suitable for both special occasions and group dining.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
At the end of the day, the spirit of yakiniku is simple — togetherness. Watching families, friends, and coworkers gather around a grill reminded us why we started: to create connection through food.
No matter how complex the business side gets, never lose sight of the joy of bringing people together.
