Today we’d like to introduce you to David Sherman.
Hi David, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In my late 20s, I had a close friend who suffered from progressive MS. I witnessed the hardships he experienced in addition to his physical challenges. He confided in me about his fears, struggles, and other obstacles he encountered during his journey. I then realized it was my mission to help and support people with special needs and chronic illnesses. My career path has involved providing direct care to individuals with developmental disabilities and teaching independent living skills to those with cognitive and physical impairments. After over 20 years of experience, I started a my consulting company in 2015.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are many unique struggles and challenges when supporting individuals with a disability. Every person and their family members are often overwhelmed and stressed, especially at the onset or progression of their illness. It has been difficult for me put myself in their shoes and identify with their suffering. However, I make an effort to actively listen to their story and share the best option(s) that will alleviate some of their stress and anxiety. Finally, finding the ideal resolution for all their issues is difficult. In my consulting practice, I provide the best option(s) to help them achieve a better life experience.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I founded Disability Consulting Solutions to support people who are physically, mentally, and emotionally overwhelmed by the challenges associated with their disability. I provide services to assist the aging and special needs population in preserving and building decision-making abilities, independence, and control of their lives. The support, encouragement, and understanding I offer are key factors that contribute to alleviating my clients’ stress and improve their quality of life.
I provide professional advice and advocacy to individuals and family members facing the challenge of managing critical issues associated with their disability. I also assist them with navigating the complexities of becoming eligible for Medicaid and SSDI benefits. In addition, I help design person-centered support plans that highlight appropriate services and resources for those who desire to live at home. My clients have greater confidence, clearer direction, and peace of mind by having someone advocate for them.
I offer sliding scale fees in the form of flat fees for most services. My policy is to discuss professional fees before performing any work to avoid surprises. Hourly prices are also available.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Having personal and professional mentors in my life has proven invaluable. Mentors allow you to express your thoughts, ideas, and goals. They provide objective feedback based on their knowledge and experience. You can then make sound decisions that minimize the risk of failure.
