Life & Work with Calvin Corey of West end of Winona

Today we’d like to introduce you to Calvin Corey.

Hi Calvin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Four years ago I moved back to Winona with my son from the cities during covid. I had worked for multiple junk companies it the twin cities before deciding to start my own.
I started new space junk removal in May on 2021 with the goal of helping local people with their removal needs.
Today marks almost 4 and a half years running a successful small business!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I can’t really complain
The only obstacle I had so far was stepping out of my trailer and breaking my foot. Couldn’t do much with a broken foot. Luckily my dad had just retired and was able to help me continue to do work while I was hurt.
People see what a great business model this is and have been starting up other junk removal businesses here and around Winona.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
New Space Junk Removal is know for donating and recycling as much as possible to avoid filling the land fill.
With all the good items we try to get it back into the community so it can continue being used.
I was born and raised in Winona and am happy to had started my business here, to give back to my community

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
With the knowledge I gained from working for 1800-got-junk and many other junk companies I was able to successfully start my own junk company.
I’d have to say the mentor i had was the owner of JDOG Junk Removal. Josh was a great boss. He listened to what I had to say about recycling and donating and used it to round off his company.
Every other junk company i worked for advertised that they donate and recycle but in reality they did not. We were thought to load the truck and once full to bring it to the transfer station.
I hated seeing so much nice and still usable items get tossed away. This was what motivated me to start my own business
