Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Peterson.
Hi Julia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Julia & Joe started Heartstrings shortly after their wedding in 2018. Julia is a classically-trained cellist and Joe is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist. They met at an improvising orchestra event in Northeast Minneapolis. Though they have different musical backgrounds, they started playing music together for their different musical projects. They started Heartstrings as a duet for events, primarily weddings, because it seemed like a natural fit. They love being able to see new couples share their vows and provide the acoustic backing for special events, including memorial services, anniversaries, and even baby showers. Now they have been married for 7 years, have 3 children, and run a small market farm north of the metro area.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Heartstrings has been an easy musical collaboration for Julia and Joe. Since they are married and live together, and have been playing together for many years now, it is easy for them to learn new music and fit the songs to any occasion. They have developed an extensive song list across many genres, and the growth of the duet has happened organically over the past few years. Now they play over 50 weddings and events each year. Any obstacles we encounter are nothing compared to the challenges we face starting and running Peterson’s Farm MN.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Heartstrings specializes in playing instrumental covers of well-known songs across a variety of genres. Joe and Julia often play a lot of popular music on piano and cello. It is easy for them to learn new songs together, so they have slowly built up a long list of songs they can play together based on people’s requests. It is always fun to learn music they haven’t heard before and come up with their own rendition.
