Hi kristina.hefty@gmail.com, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey to a life in parks & recreation felt inevitable. My first jobs in high school were teaching ice skating and working as a golf caddy. I worked in campus recreation as a student at the University of Minnesota for 5 years, even serving as the Rec Sports Advisory Board Chair. After college, I continued teaching skating for many cities around the Twin Cities (Rogers, Elk River, St. Michael) and began a career in college athletics soon thereafter. I worked for the Gopher Spirit Squad for 15 years before beginning work for the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board in December of 2022. At MPRB I have served as an Event Coordinator and the Recreation Supervisor for Downtown Parks. I have a very active team who are committed to vibrancy in Downtown Minneapolis, offering creative programming and events for all who live, work, and play downtown.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, economic struggles in 2008-2009 changed my career trajectory as many cities and businesses were laying people off. As a recent college graduate, I decided to start my own business and continued to pursue my career goals through part time opportunities.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I’m most proud of is my work as a leader – transforming public spaces into vibrant community destinations through innovative programming, partnerships, sponsorship development, and operational excellence. My team is everything and developing a strong team is how I’ve been most successful. Throughout my career in both higher education and public service, I have built a reputation for bringing people together, creating meaningful experiences, and developing initiatives that strengthen organizations and the communities we serve.
With more than 15 years of leadership experience, I excel at turning ambitious ideas into success with measurable outcomes. My expertise spans across different realms including strategic planning, organizational leadership, event/program development, stakeholder engagement, sponsorship procurement, public-private partnerships, marketing/social media, and community activation.
What sets me apart is my ability to see the potential in people, programs, and places. I thrive on identifying opportunities for improvement, building strong relationships, and creating sustainable solutions that leave organizations stronger than I found them. I lead with creativity, collaboration, and a commitment to public service. I take great pride in improving every park, program, and organization I have the opportunity to influence. My work is driven by the belief that thoughtful leadership and intentional community investment can transform not only public spaces, but also the experiences people have within them.
What are your plans for the future?
Continued leadership work in the vibrancy of Downtown Minneapolis, and providing great service to our community through parks and recreation.
