Meet Olympia Chatman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olympia Chatman.

Hi Olympia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Olympia Chatman. I’m from Chicago born and raised and now live in Minnesota. Born Oct. 1st, 1974 to Patricia ann Curington and Mark Chatman Jr. Born with a heart murmur and was told I would ultimately pass within hrs but lived. I’ve had to fight all my life for my life. A rape survivor at 7 and molested by family and friends till 12 yrs old. Mom and dad divorced at 12, and my mother’s new boyfriend didn’t want me around so my mother left me with friends of hers and the plague of gangs and drugs in the community infected me also. The streets were now my family and selling drugs to survive became the choice. Violence followed that life and multiple gang fights and shootouts turned the temperature up and eventually got burned. Thank God it wasn’t death but multiple shootouts and a man’s life was lost and fighting for self-defense was nullified by the fact it was a dope spot where the shootout took place of the which I was sentenced to 39 yrs. During that time, I furthered my education and found Christ. I began writing movies and music. The comedy began a love that I am currently pursuing. Free now for 9 yrs and working at a teen challenge to help with ppl in addiction and speak anywhere that would hear my story and hopefully change their lives.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think being in criminal activities we don’t know the long game. Doing what we were doing we never realize after yrs of prison we’d come back to society and not really be accepted but forever marked for priors that affect job placement etc. So it’s never been smooth it’s been hard but because of the fighter mentality, all I know is to continue to keep fighting for my dreams.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What I do is now encouraging as many as possible by living righteous and pursuing relentlessly and supporting all who are trying to bring change to the streets and those affected by the life I know oh so well.

How do you think about luck?
Following God and overcoming obstacles makes me happy. Being real with family and friends make me happy. Paying my bills without lying and cheating makes me happy.
