Rising Stars: Meet Clare Aaker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clare Aaker.

Hi Clare, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up on an 80 acre apple orchard in River Falls Wisconsin, surrounded by family and a multitude of pets. I was the self-appointed photographer during our family vacations and continued the hobby while I was studying Mass Communications at Benedictine College in Kansas. I started photographing weddings in 2015, and slowly built up my business for five years while working in advertising in Minneapolis. I now photograph families & couples full-time, all over the country.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been smoother than most, I would say, but I’ve definitely hit a few bumps. Working full-time and growing my business was challenging. The pandemic was also challenging, as it was for every business owner in the world. I had gotten laid off from my job and decided to go all in with photography, and I felt like I was maybe insane… but elopements exploded even more than before and it all worked out for the best.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My style is a mix between fine art & documentary, and I strive for emotional and honest story telling. I specialize in families & intimate weddings, such as small weddings & elopements. I work quite a bit up on the North Shore, along Lake Superior, which I adore. I focus on looking for moments that will remind you what the day was all about — whether that’s washing dishes with your two-year-old, or getting married with only your parents present along a shoreline.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I would say don’t be afraid to reach out to those you admire. Send them a DM, offer to buy them coffee. Form a relationship with them instead of mining for information right away. Look to see if there are local Facebook groups that you can join & learn from conversations already happening. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, because (most) people love to talk about themselves!

  • Families begin at $500
  • Elopements begin at $1200
  • Weddings begin at $2800
