Rising Stars: Meet Michelle Kuker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Kuker.

Hi Michelle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began Blush Film Co. after several years of working in corporate America as a digital marketer. I felt unfulfilled, limited by working in a cubicle every day, and wanted to have the freedom to be more creative in my work. I applied for a Digital Media Design Master’s program at Harvard University (on a bit of a whim, mind you) with the intention of studying front-end web development and design. A bit to my surprise, I ended up getting in! I quit my corporate job within a week, and went back to school for two years.

During this time back in school, my sister got married. It was one of the best days of my life; emotional, blissful, and deeply meaningful. The only way we could relive those moments and soak back up every single detail was through her wedding video (which my aunt happened to record on her handheld camcorder!). I then fell in love with the idea of documenting the most special day in someone’s life. Paired with videography and photography electives in my Digital Media Design program, I knew I could create wedding films in an intentional, artistic way that immersed my couples back into all the “feels”. And so, Blush Film Co. was born! I finished school in 2019 and dove into wedding videography full-time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As you can imagine, starting a business just a few months before COVID-19 hit was not ideal, and there were many challenges to navigate through during that time. The wedding industry was virtually on hold with many postponements and cancellations. There was so much uncertainty surrounding couples and wedding vendors (and of course, the entire rest of the world!).

I am grateful to have learned about the importance of serving my clients in an understanding and compassionate way, and how to be flexible early on in my business journey. This also gave me time to take part in other projects that would expand my overall skillset in videography. Lastly, I had the opportunity to build relationships with other vendors who were experiencing the same set of hurdles, and managed to make some incredible friends along the way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Blush Film Co., I create cinematic, joyful, and timeless wedding films tailored to represent each couple authentically and to embrace their unique preferences and vision. At the core of my work, I am a storyteller with immense honor of crafting the experience of my couple’s wedding day into a deeply meaningful and cherished work of art. The ultimate aim is to immerse my couples back into the atmosphere of their wedding day in a way that genuinely “feels” like them.

No wedding day, love story, or couple are the same, and I really wanted to offer a custom process for my couples where they can give as much or as little input as they’d like into the creation of their wedding film. From a customizable videography collection, extensive questionnaire, to unlimited videography coverage on the big day, my priority is to serve my couples as I would my own family; flexibly and compassionately.

The Blush Film Co. video style is very light, romantic, and whimsical, channeling a timeless, fine-art aesthetic. The story of the wedding day serves as the foundational piece for each film, complemented by carefully selected music and spoken words. Particular focus is given to candid moments, emotions, and details!

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
It sounds cliché, but over the course of my career thus far, I’ve realized that finding meaning and purpose behind the work that you is an essential element to feeling content in your life both during and outside of work. Purposeful projects help fuel your creativity and nourish your mind. The concept that I am creating keepsakes that will hold meaning and be cherished for generations to come gets me through some of the tougher days as a business owner and creative. I could not be more grateful that I found an avenue like this for my career that I am so passionate about!

I’d say something that also tends to get overlooked when defining success is finding a balance between your personal and professional life. Being a very sensitive and empathic person, sometimes I find it difficult to prioritize myself or spend time resting when I have several projects in my backlog that I’m really excited to complete! I think it’s important for humans to rest, recharge, and take that break for social/family/friend time. I tend to feel rejuvenated creatively and more focused when I do this!
