Sarah Swenson of On location. on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Sarah Swenson. Check out our conversation below.

Sarah , so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Time disappears any time I’ve got my camera in my hand. I can’t always find the just right words to describe the world around me in the beautiful way poets can. Being able to share the way I see things through photographs is what feels like me. A camera in my hand means I’m continuing to learn, connecting with others, and letting the creative juices flow.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a photographer that also teaches preschool part-time. I enjoy connecting with people of all ages. I aim to keep photo sessions light, fun, and as stress-free as possible. It shouldn’t have to be something you feel like you have to do, but something you want to do. There are so many sweet moments in life and it’s so much fun getting to capture them for families.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My parents, my Grandpa Gene, and animals taught me the most about work. I grew up on a farm and saw first-hand how important the work was. It meant something. If you skipped your work, animals would go hungry. Fields wouldn’t get plowed. Cows would get loose if the fence wasn’t fixed. Farm work showed me the work I do affects those around me and that it can be for better or for worse. I certainly want to be good for the world around me, so do my best to put good efforts into my work.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
You can’t just sit around and expect things to change. For a while I was having some pretty terrible pain in my lower back and hip. For a while, I thought if I just rested it, maybe it would go away. Obviously that didn’t work out so well. It didn’t change until I took action. After seeking help, I started weight training and finally got some relief. You need to take some action to get results.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
Winter is awesome! It seems like a majority of people enjoy the sunshine of summer most and I’m over here loving the sparkly snow.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Hopefully people will have been left with positive feelings about me. If they can say I was nice to them, helped them, or made them smile or feel special in some way I would feel good about that.
