An Inspired Chat with Kaitlyn McManus of Minneapolis

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kaitlyn McManus . Check out our conversation below.

Kaitlyn , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
As of lately I’ve been setting aside time each day to learn how to pinstripe and sign paint! In October I opened a studio space with 4 other girls, I painted the mural outside of the studio with the help of a friend. I enjoyed it so much I thought I should dive further into similar painting styles.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kaitlyn McManus. I’m a cosmetic tattoo artist based in Minneapolis, MN. The majority of my work is tattooing eyebrows, lip blush, eyelash enhancement tattoos and areola restoration. People come to me to boost their self confidence and to be able to help people with that leaves my heart so full.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I think my dad saw me clearly before I saw myself. He always tells stories about how much I remind him of his own dad.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
PATIENCE. When I’ve struggled the most, whether it be with technique, learning to market myself, the ebbs and flows of busy season/slow season, everything always works out. You just have to keep practicing and have patience.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
My cohorts for sure. I co-own a studio with 4 other girls and bouncing ideas off each other is key. If one of us is feeling down or in a rut it’s so useful to talk to one or all of the others and get fresh ideas.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Definitely what I was born to do. Growing up I was always told to go to college and find a secure, steady job. I gave college a try but it wasn’t for me!
