We recently had the chance to connect with Ashley Helleksen and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I would definitely say I’m wandering. I feel as though if I stay on the path, I don’t allow myself push, drive, desire or the grace that comes with veering off ‘normalcy’. As an artist, my mind is never off; I’m always looking for inspiration + different forms of incorporation.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Ashley, just a small-town gal from Minnesota. When I define what it is I do, I go from saying, “I’m a leather worker” to “I hand-craft small batch leather goods.” It’s really hard to confine myself into a certain role because I try not to fit in the same box, making the same things.
I mostly, though, hone in on women’s purses + totes, wallets, small accessories + belts. I would define my overall style as southwest / boho, but I also like to tailer pieces that are classic + can be worn every day.
I have an Avion [similar to an Airstream camper] that I converted into a traveling boutique where I pop up at small to large music festivals, art shows, breweries, wineries + other boutiques.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful would have to be when I became a mother at 25. There’s nothing like birthing a human and guiding them the best you can, hoping you make the right decisions to shape them into an independent, kind, empathetic + successful human that will leave the world a better place than which they entered.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Imposter syndrome is very real and I feel that type of fear has held me back the most.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My friends would say that being happy, staying true to myself and my family are the most important to me.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. How do you know when you’re out of your depth?
When I start to confine myself or compare myself + my work to similar artists, that I feel are way ahead of me.
