Check Out Alex Lambert’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Lambert.

Hi Alex, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my career at a small public relations shop in Minneapolis. We were a four-person team with a hefty client roster and I was immediately thrown into the deep end which was awesome.

We had a client call us on a Friday saying that their social person quit and asked if we did social media. Being in client services my boss said, “of course we do!” hung up the phone and raced around the office to find out if one of us could do the project. My response was, “I tweet sometimes,” so I took it on as a temporary project. The client ended up loving what we were doing so much that it became a full time offering at the agency. That’s when I knew my path was going to be more in the social media space versus strictly public relations. Since then, I’ve worked on everything from small startups to larger brands like Adidas and Target. Currently, I’m the Social Media Director at Russell Herder in Minneapolis.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been far from smooth! For a large chunk of my career, I was freelancing and that journey comes with its own set of obstacles. Jobs have been lost, inspiration has been low and the pressure of wanting to be ‘the most creative’ has been there. But I think everything happens for a reason and we always end up where we are supposed to be. Every obstacle has created an opportunity for something better than I could have imagined.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My bread and butter is social media strategy. This includes everything from launching a client on social for the first time to content creation to influencer management. I’ve always lived by the motto that there’s never anything that’s ‘not my job’ and I think that has served me well. If a client wants it and it’s not already in my skillset, I will learn it. I want to be able to make the most sound strategic and creative decision for my clients and this comes from knowing all aspects of the social media process. I’m really proud of the clients I have worked on. I feel incredibly blessed to have already worked on some dream accounts.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Being a creative it’s hard not to take things personally, you sometimes dump your heart and soul into a project only to have a client come back and not like it at all. My first boss always used to say, ‘it’s PR not the ER’ and I have firmly lived that out in every job I’ve had. What I do is important for bottom lines but I’m not saving lives. A client can be not supper jazzed about a concept but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea or I’m bad at my job. I also believe in the importance of being kind to every single person you meet. You never know who you’re going to need in your corner or who is connected to who.
