Check Out Amy Cherne’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Cherne.

Hi Amy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started Amy’s Homestead Goods in 2022. I am a stay at home mom to (now) two beautiful children and was looking for a way to earn some income and keep myself busy! I obtained my cottage food registration and started to sell at our local farmers market. I soon fell in love with creating new recipes and bonding with customers. I looked forward to it all week! While doing the farmers market I also started to attend Vendor/Craft shows and learned so much from other people. Ways to display items, learning how to price items, hearing about great events to sell at and more! I thought I would be in competition with all the other vendors but it turned out that everyone was kind and helpful! I have made several friends through selling our products! My husband and I purchased a hobby farm about 7 months ago and we are gearing up for the year and expanding our business with new items such as new fresh produce, flowers, animals and more. We are having a grand opening on August 2nd 2025 with a ribbon cutting, vendor show, walking path, games and more! We are currently hatching baby chickens and adopted 3 donkeys! We are hoping to add more animals soon! We are also planning a very large vegetable garden, an orchard, and flower garden. In between the farm life we will be attending the farmers market and vendor shows selling our items such as sourdough breads, scones, canned goods, simmer pots, skincare products and more! We recently launched our website too where some items are available for shipping and will keep you up to date on where we will be selling our products!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Before I started to actually sell my items I almost quit. I wasn’t sure if I would actually make a profit and was very discouraged. I had called my aunt and voiced my concerns to her and she gave me the pep talk I needed and I got back on track! There are always bumps in the road, sometimes the children are screaming and the bread comes out burned but you just keep going! The gift of being a stay at home mother and having my own business is worth it! Some shows you go to you only sell a few items and the next show you sell out. Staying positive is the key!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We started at the farmers market selling mini loaves of sweet breads. They sold but not great. So Soon we moved on to new items and learned to make Sourdough breads, Cake Cups, Cookies, and a ton of jams, salsa, and pickles! We have a hard time keeping our pickles in stock! We offer a Hot n Spicy, Original Dill, and Bread and Butter Pickles. Our best selling item is strawberry rhubarb Jam! I think the fact I am always alert and greeting customers and telling them about our products sets us apart from other people. When you say hello it opens a conversation and you make new clients, learn about their lives, and I have even learned baking and canning tricks from customers too!

What do you like and dislike about the city?
We have only lived in EDEN VALLEY for around 7 months now but I was welcomed with warmth. I joined the EDEN VALLEY Chamber of Commerce and am starting to connect with new people and learn even more about running a business. It is a small city and that’s the way I prefer to live. People tend to be more friendly and helpful in small towns in my opinion! The city puts on great events and is very family oriented!
