Check Out Ashley Steiner’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Steiner.

Hi Ashley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
WonderWorks Theatre began as a dream rooted in my own personal journey as a student, teacher, and parent. Growing up, theatre was one of the few places where I truly felt like I belonged. It offered a space where people with different talents and personalities could come together to create something meaningful. That sense of connection stuck with me, and as I pursued a career in education, I found myself gravitating toward creative, student-centered learning. I eventually started directing school plays and building after-school drama programs—often from the ground up.

After years of dreaming about it, I finally decided to create a space that focused on what I valued most in theatre: connection, confidence, and creativity. In the summer of 2024, I opened WonderWorks Theatre in River Falls, WI. I wanted to offer a place where kids could explore theatre in a supportive, developmentally appropriate environment—without the pressure of perfection or the need for prior experience.

What started with just a few small classes renting space around town has grown into a vibrant, inclusive studio of our own—offering a variety of age appropriate acting and improv classes, and other unique theatre experiences. Our studio participates in community events, offers summer productions through local partnerships, and have plans to expand into a leveled acting pathway that supports students as they grow. It’s truly been a whirlwind of learning, adapting, and growing.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like many small businesses, the road to starting WonderWorks Theatre hasn’t been entirely smooth—but every challenge has taught me something valuable. When I first launched in October, I was renting spaces all over town—nine classes in six different locations. It was a juggling act that required a lot of energy and flexibility. Finding a permanent studio space was a major turning point, but even with a home base, I’ve had to work hard to find my rhythm—offering classes that are not only exciting and enriching for families, but also convenient and accessible.

Although the River Falls community has been incredibly supportive, building awareness and consistent enrollment takes time. There have been classes I’ve poured my heart into that didn’t run due to low registration, and moments when I’ve questioned whether all the effort was really worth it. But every time I see a child step out of their shell, try something new, or beam with pride on stage, it reminds me why I started this journey. Growth can be slow and unpredictable—but it’s also deeply rewarding.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At WonderWorks Theatre, we create theatre experiences that are fun, inclusive, and designed with kids and families in mind. We specialize in acting, improv, and performance-based classes for children ages 2–15, and our offerings range from creative preschool classes to collaborative short film projects, one-day theatre events, and full productions. What we really focus on is process over perfection. While many theatre programs center heavily on the final performance, we celebrate the creative journey just as much—building confidence, collaboration, and self-expression every step of the way.

What sets WonderWorks apart is our commitment to creating a space where every child—regardless of experience level, personality, or background—feels seen, supported, and celebrated. We’re proud to offer programming that is developmentally appropriate, approachable for new performers, and adaptable to meet the needs of diverse learners. I’m especially proud of the trust families place in us and the joy we see when kids realize what they’re capable of.

How do you think about luck?
I think luck plays a role, but it’s often what we do with it that really matters. I’ve had moments of good luck—like finding the perfect studio space at just the right time, or crossing paths with families who believed in my vision early on and helped spread the word. Those little bursts of luck have absolutely helped move things forward.

But I’ve also had challenges that didn’t feel so lucky—like launching in the fall and navigating through unpredictable winter weather, or putting heart and time into a class only to have it canceled due to low enrollment. In those moments, it’s less about luck and more about resilience. I’ve learned to trust the process, pivot when needed, and keep showing up for the kids and families who do come through the door.

In many ways, I think luck has been a spark—but consistency, creativity, and community have kept the fire going.
