Today we’d like to introduce you to Camila Sanchez.
Camila, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My wife and I tried mead for the first time about 15 years ago and really enjoyed it. We looked for mead in various liquor stores over the years with little success. Til the day I told my wife I wanted to open up a Meadery about four years ago. Now, White Bear Meadery has been open for a little over two years. A small family owned business that currently serves up 17 varieties of mead out of our tasting room. Made with Minnesota Frown honey and as many Minnesota Grown ingredients as possible. Support local, Drink local.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
We’ve had some ups and downs. A lot of our jib in the tasting room is educating our patrons about mead as it is unknown to many people. Of course COVID had a impact on business last year and into the early parts of this year. We were able to stay open for pick up only during the more stringent restrictions and even delivered around the cities to help pay the bills. We even shipped mead orders around the state after we updated our website to accommodate it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Currently I am a Jack of all trades at White Bear Meadery. Besides bar keeping, bottling, canning,, ordering, etc. I also create and ferment up our meads. Really enjoy using locally sourced fresh ingredients like our honey, strawberries, raspberries and apple ciders. It makes such a difference in flavor in our meads. Fresh ingredients, fresh flavor.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Really enjoy people’s willingness to support a small business by giving our meads a taste.
