Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey McCabe
Hi Casey, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began my journey as a journalist in high school working for my local radio station, WORT FM. What started as an opportunity to gain some experience to put on my college application morphed into a lifelong pursuit. In college I continued my work as a journalist both as the Executive Producer of Radio K’s Real College Podcast as well as the Vice President of the Minnesota Republic, a student media publication. I also spent several summers during college working at a variety of media organizations based in the Twin Cities and Wisconsin. My journey took a turn when I graduated from college and accepted a role as a Morning News Producer at KGW News in Portland, Oregon, an NBC affiliate. I honed my skills as a journalist in my first TV role over the course of two years before deciding to change course yet again. I left Portland in July of 2024 and embarked on a two month road trip across the U.S.A visiting 32 states, both oceans and borders. I then embarked on a two week whirlwind trip around Europe. I am now comfortably back at home in the Midwest and working on nailing down my next opportunity.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Along the way I have encountered multiple struggles ranging from burnout to wanderlust and physical injury. During my time at KGW I quickly became fatigued by the day to day grind of working from midnight until 8AM in the morning and fulfilling the many tasks that came along with my role as producer. I also contributed to a documentary project titled “Sick Medicine” that explored misconduct by medical professionals and their actions to evade law enforcement and accountability. While this project was one of the most enjoyable of my career thus far and gave me an immense sense of pride, slogging through hundreds of lines of data took its toll. These combined experiences and my growing age spurred me to embark on the trip of a lifetime which fulfilled me mentally, physically and spiritually. During the tail end of my trip to Europe I endured a fall in Lisbon, Portugal which resulted in a dislocated shoulder. I am still navigating both caring for my physical health and acquiring a new job in the Twin Cities.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in audio production but at this point in my career have tried my hand at virtually all mediums. I am also quite the amateur photographer. What sets me apart both in my day to day work as a journalist and passion for photography is my willingness to tread into waters seldom traveled by others. Whether that be breaking ground on a topic like medical malpractice or climbing out to the highest mountain ledge to capture that one of a kind picture. I also dedicate myself fully to the task at hand. In the past that has meant churning out profiles on 20 medical professionals a day, making a breaking news segment on the Gaza protests shine as well as pushing myself through a 15 mile hike. I enjoy challenges and living both my professional and personal life to the fullest.
How do you think about happiness?
Travel and exploration is one of by biggest sources of happiness. In traveling and especially camping/hiking I feel that I am able to simultaneously discover new and wonderful places, as well as discover more about myself. Travel allows me to pull back the veil that dampens day-to-day life and experience the world through a new more focused lens. I also enjoy staying active whether that be a ride around the city on my bike or a hike in the woods. Whether the streets and trails are known to me is of no consequence. I enjoy letting go mentally, thinking through my troubles and formulating plans for the future. I am also quite the social butterfly and enjoy spending time with friends and family. There is nothing like a conversation with someone who truly understands you and where you are coming from.
