Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl and Duane Carey.
Hi Cheryl and Duane, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Duane and I met in high school and have been married for almost 40 years. He joined the Air Force and flew fighters and other high-performance aircraft for over 20 years and flew the Space Shuttle for NASA during that time. I was the constant in our home, raising our two children.
After leaving the USAF, we decided that we wanted to continue to give to our country and started a small business called One-Eighty Out, Inc. The name stems from us pivoting 180 degrees from what we were used to doing. We travel worldwide promoting math and science in the classrooms of schools and in keynote speaking engagements. We use the pull of space flight to entice students and customers to work toward their dreams.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our biggest roadblock was COVID-19. Most of our work requires that we visit schools and we were unable to do so because of the pandemic. We did learn quickly how to do our presentations virtually.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Since there are very few astronauts in this world, our company is pretty unique.
Less than 600 people worldwide have flown in space. This type of uniqueness brings an enormous amount of interest to what we do and inspires others to strive to realize their full potential.
What matters most to you?
Reaching the kids that need us the most. There are so many students out there that seem to have no dreams or hope for their future. We want to inspire and show them that they too can have the American dream if they work hard and keep focused.
