Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Anderson.
Hi Chris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Chris Anderson:
Earned B.A. Majoring in Music. Capstones in Music Education and Piano Performance
Taught full time as an independent piano teacher from 2010 until 2020
Moved to Rochester, Minnesota from Portland, OR in October of 2020 and established the Anderson Piano Academy
What made this piano studio different: Actively taught traditional 1:1 in-person lessons while maintaining a significant virtual teaching studio from Portland, OR and prepared the new style of teaching called ‘Lab” for the intermediate students. Chris maintained the largest private piano studio in the greater Rochester area all from his home studio in NW Rochester.
Between 2022 and 2026, gradually added in teachers and programs to establish a unique long form of piano utilizing innovative tools to meet the needs of the modern student.
Chris bought 3131 Superior Drive NW to externalize the studio and continue its growth.
Now with 4 teachers and 1 admin on the team, The Anderson Piano Academy has become the newest major music institution in Rochester MN.
Programs:
Nest to Notes: 3-5 year old students. Generalized group instruction to prepare listening, movement, rhythm, coordination and community. It is brand new for this coming summer, but we think this will be a significant program offering for the city.
Chickadees: 5-7 year old students. Traditional 1:1 study for beginning piano students
Robins: 8+ year old students. Traditional 1:1 study for older beginner and transfer students
Loons: Intermediate piano study in lab style
Owls: Advanced and Adult students.
We currently have 102 enrolled students and are prepared to continue growth in all programs
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Independent music instruction has always been a challenging career path. There are no guaranteed certifications, courses, or institutions that ensure success. Building a thriving studio requires a rare combination of musical artistry, teaching excellence, and entrepreneurial vision.
Before COVID-19, Chris Anderson operated as an independent piano teacher, navigating each stage of growth with the understanding that every transition carried both opportunity and risk.
When the pandemic forced music education online, many piano teachers chose retirement rather than adaptation. Instead, Chris successfully transitioned to virtual teaching and grew his studio by nearly 20% through increased lesson frequency and attracting new students during an uncertain time.
During the move from Portland to Rochester in the middle of the pandemic, Chris built a hybrid studio model, teaching students in person in Rochester while continuing to serve his Portland students virtually across different time zones.
Another major transformation came through shifting away from a purely traditional one-on-one teaching model into the innovative lab-style teaching approach that would later become a defining strength of Anderson Piano Academy. While developing this new system was initially difficult, it ultimately created a unique and highly effective learning environment for students.
As the studio grew into the largest private piano studio in the Rochester area, operating out of the Anderson family home brought significant logistical challenges. Hiring and training the first teachers to embrace and carry forward the Anderson Piano Academy vision was another important hurdle, but one that proved tremendously successful.
The purchase of the new studio building at 3131 Superior Drive NW marked another pivotal milestone. Through a contract-for-deed arrangement, the academy was able to reduce the required down payment from the traditional 20% to 10%, making the purchase possible at a critical stage of growth.
Now operating from its new home with a team of four teachers and an administrative staff member, Anderson Piano Academy continues to expand rapidly. With the addition of its early childhood program, “Nest to Notes,” the academy is positioned to serve as the premier piano education program in the Rochester area.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Anderson Piano Academy is a piano-exclusive music school based in Rochester that specializes in creating engaging, student-centered piano education for children and families. Our mission goes far beyond simply teaching students how to play piano. We are intentionally building a musical community where students and families feel connected, supported, and inspired.
At the core of our program is the belief that music education should be both excellent and joyful. We focus heavily on building strong foundations in technique, music literacy, rhythm, creativity, and practice skills while keeping lessons engaging and motivating. Many of our students begin reading music and understanding rhythm from their very first lessons.
Our programs are carefully designed around each stage of musical growth. Younger beginners start in individualized lessons where they build confidence and foundational skills. As students progress, many transition into our innovative lab-style teaching model, which combines collaborative group learning with individualized instruction. This model has become one of the defining strengths of the academy because it encourages motivation, accountability, teamwork, and long-term student retention. We also offer advanced one-on-one instruction for serious students pursuing higher-level repertoire and artistic development.
What truly sets Anderson Piano Academy apart is that we do not view ourselves as simply a lesson provider. We are creating a musical home for families. In addition to our traditional biannual recitals, which are expected of a high-performing music studio, we intentionally create additional opportunities for students and parents to connect with one another outside of weekly lessons. Throughout the year we host events such as ice cream socials, music game nights, and community activities that help students form friendships through music.
For our older students, we also organize “Symphony Nights,” where teens attend classical concerts together as a group. These experiences help students see music as something bigger than practice assignments and weekly lessons. They begin developing artistic identity, friendships, and a lifelong appreciation for music and the arts.
We are especially proud of the culture we have built. What began as a small independent piano studio has grown into the largest private piano academy in the Rochester area, with multiple teachers, an administrative team, and a dedicated commercial location. Despite that growth, we work hard to maintain a warm, personal atmosphere where students feel encouraged, parents feel supported, and teachers are invested in every child’s success.
Above all, what sets Anderson Piano Academy apart is our long-term vision for music education. We are not simply teaching students to perform at recitals. We are helping young people develop confidence, discipline, creativity, friendships, and a lifelong love of music.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always deeply interested in music, learning, and competition. Piano quickly became one of the biggest parts of my life, but I also loved sports, chess, and education in general. I was the kind of person who enjoyed throwing myself fully into different activities and trying to improve at whatever I was doing.
Personality-wise, I was generally easygoing and social. I tended to make friends easily and enjoyed being involved in different groups and communities. At the same time, I was very motivated and goal-oriented underneath the surface. I liked challenges, structure, and the process of steadily improving over time.
I had the opportunity to pursue several interests seriously while growing up. I earned the rank of Eagle Scout through the Boy Scouts of America, played varsity chess and competed at the state level, participated in sports, and performed solo piano recitals. Looking back, many of those experiences shaped who I became as both a teacher and business owner. Chess helped develop strategic thinking and patience, music cultivated discipline and creativity, and scouting reinforced leadership and service.
More than anything, I think I was always drawn toward growth-oriented environments where people were learning, improving, and working together toward something meaningful. That same mindset still heavily influences how I approach teaching and building Anderson Piano Academy today.
