Today we’d like to introduce you to Elissa Evenson.
Hi Elissa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Ever since I was little, I have been interested in art. Around middle school, I became interested in photography and started taking high school classes. I saved up and bought my first camera off Amazon, and I haven’t stopped taking pictures since then.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Although I have never stopped taking photos, it hasn’t always been easy. Like any artist, I occasionally struggle with art block or feeling like my work isn’t good enough. The best way to overcome art block is by drawing inspiration from other content- other photographers, movies, or other art media. To overcome my feelings of worthlessness, I must keep reminding myself that art is subjective. I may hate it, but to others, my work is art. It also helps to compare my shoots with previous shoots and see how far I’ve come.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am primarily a portrait photographer who specializes in dark and moody shoots. My work is heavily inspired by horror. I love creating images that either give the viewer a sense of unease or give off an ethereal feel. My favorite shoots are either fantasy or horror themed. I love photographing any kind of creature- from demons to fairies.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think being original is the most important quality to have that will help me be successful. So many creators hop on trends (which isn’t necessarily bad), but it doesn’t set you apart from other similar creators. By being original, you stand out from others and make yourself memorable. You are creating a niche market for yourself.
