Today we’d like to introduce you to Emmaline Childs.
Hi Emmaline, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Today, I can call myself a content creator, but even 3 years ago I never dreamed this would be in my future. I’m your typical suburban thirty-something woman. I went to college, got a job, got married, bought a house, had a kid. Pretty textbook until I got into my thirties and did something I never thought I’d do – get divorced. Nobody ever plans to get divorced when they get married, so it’s safe to say my whole perspective on life was altered a bit. Suddenly it wasn’t so textbook and I had all of these empty pages that I needed to fill.
I had finally found my stride when the pandemic hit, and once again my world changed. I’m extremely outgoing and an extrovert and I badly needed a social outlet. That’s when I found TikTok. I very quickly found a love for creating content and made it my mission to make videos that make people laugh, or feel like they can relate to someone else. The sense of community I have found in content creation is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before. I was suddenly connecting with people across the world – and not just in my neighborhood.
While I’m still that thirty-something mom in the suburbs, I also found a new skill I’m good at. Some people knit, or read, or go for hikes. I create content.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has certainly not been a smooth road. As I mentioned, going through a divorce is life-altering. Even an easy divorce is very hard to go through. It affected just about every aspect of life from family to finances, friendships, my home, how I parent. Everything changed and I had to re-learn how to be an adult. It took literal years to get to a place where I felt “normal” again.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m known most for my short format videos where I joke about the relatable parts of life, all filmed from the familiar places of home like my bedroom/home office, my car, or my kitchen. I want to create transparency about the not-so-perfect parts of life so that others can laugh along, relate to each other, and feel encouraged. As a corporate millennial based in Minnesota, a lot of my content surrounds that. It’s so fun to see people in the comment sections who are going through the exact same thing that I am – and getting to laugh along with me. I recently had someone who specializes in brand marketing tell me that I’m a comedian, and while I would never have called myself that, I suppose that’s exactly what I do. If I made you laugh or at least smirk a little, my job is done.
I’m very proud of the following I’ve built up and truly believe I have the best followers. In fact, I’ve been able to able to give thousands of dollars back to the community because of their support. It’s pretty awesome to see so many people come together to give back.
I’m currently working on a podcast with two insanely awesome women that is a digital-first podcast on the obstacles and opportunities young women run into, and the tools we use to succeed. I am so excited for this pod to take flight this summer!
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I think it goes without saying that TikTok is my happy place. Many people say that the internet can be a bad and scary place, but I think if that’s true you’re not using it right. It can be a wonderful place to find community and resources to help live your best life.
The video app Marco Polo has made a huge impact on my friendships and relationships in general. It allows me to add that extra human touch to what would normally be a series of texts. I can show my true emotions instead of using emojis.
