Check Out Giavanni Smith’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Giavanni Smith.

Hi Giavanni, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It has always been a lifelong dream of mine to own a bake shop. From my days of baking a two-bite birthday cake for my brother and cousins in my Easy Bake Oven to now developing and perfecting my recipes, I was always extremely excited to share what I made with everyone around me. Growing up, I baked at every opportunity; school bake sales, family events, and even work potlucks. In high school, a teacher gave me my first paid gig making treats for her daughter’s wedding shower. I was so proud of myself back then for landing my first gig, but I definitely will be keeping those first attempts photos under lock and key! This catalyst made me realize I could have a career doing something I loved.

I continued to bake for close family and friends throughout the years, but after a “few” years, I was finally ready to offer Sugar Dumplin’ cakes and other delectables to the public. I talked myself out of starting many times, but ultimately I wanted to be an example to my daughter Kenzley(2). I want her to see that it is possible to push past her fears and anxieties to fulfill her dreams as long as she is willing to work hard.

I love creating something that is not only visually appealing but also delicious. I enjoy a great slice of cake and want everyone to feel even greater joy when they bite into a slice of Sugar Dumplin’. I always strive to make treats that taste so good you have to pause and do a double take before diving in for a second bite. Every time I bake, I want to put a smile on my customers’ faces while they celebrate a joyous life event. Whether it be a birthday, anniversary, wedding, or just because they want my delicious treats, I strive to create a lasting memory in every forkful.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest struggle during the journey of building Sugar Dumplin’ has been my self-doubt. Am I ready? Will I have customers? Most importantly, will people love my cakes as much as my family does?

Growing up in The Bahamas, I was surrounded by family and friends, but after moving to Minnesota, I had to build my clientele from scratch and create a new name for myself. I made all of the “too busy” excuses I could find. When I finally decided to make the leap and put my cakes out there, I realized I was allowing self-doubt to control my destiny. Sugar Dumplin’ was a gift I needed to share with as many people as possible! My family, friends, and their friends/acquaintances couldn’t all be wrong.

I am still learning and perfecting my craft, but I am excited about any new opportunities. Most of all, I would like to thank my previous, current, and future members of the Sugar Dumplin’ Family!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Sugar Dumplin’ specializes in special occasion bespoke cakes. I pride myself on not only creating a cake that brings our client’s visions to life but, most importantly, a cake that is delicious and decadent.

Do you have any advice for those just starting?
Just get started! Ignore the voices in your head that tell you it’s not good enough or every detail isn’t perfect. As time goes on, you will improve because the best lessons come from experience. Just commit yourself to ensuring your next is always better than your last.
